2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

Don’t look now, but the 2nd wild card in the east is the Detroit Red Wings. They’re tied with Florida with 3 games in hand and 3 points behind the Isles with 4 games in hand.
By points percentage, the East is getting VERY loose in the wildcard slots. The top three in each Division are pretty well separated from the pack, but from there it's an alley fight. The Isles have some points banked, but Detroit, Pittsburgh, Florida and Buffalo are all right there. And really it's just the Red Wings that are riding a hot-ish streak ... the rest are all sort of just chugging along and the the Pens are out and out struggling.

Washington was wise to pull the rip cord, IMO ... and Pittsburgh should probably give it some thought between now and the deadline, depending on whether or not they get some bounce out of getting Jarry back ... once he knocks off the rust.

It’s always anxiety provoking around the trade deadline— watching other teams make moves to shore up their holes and your team hasn’t pulled the trigger yet.
The way to the Cup is through Boston…Dundon, Waddell, et al know this. If Timoteo Mier isn’t coming our way, here’s hoping that their Plan B is up to the challenge.

Look ... Boston's very good and that move makes them better. No escaping that. That said, Carolina's still a tough matchup for them. That trepidation cuts both ways.

The Pens have lost 4 in a row, the Caps skid is up to 6. And the Pens are weathering some internal squabbling between Mike Sullivan and Ron Hextall. Sullivan wants Jakob Chychrun, Hextall doesn’t want to move first rounders and the Yotes reportedly want 2 of them, according to Rob Rossi at The Athletic. The Pens also have a cap crunch, CapFriendly says they have $18k available and can’t activate Jan Rutta off LTIR because they can’t fit him under the cap.

Like I said ... the Pens should give it some thought. I don't think that roster is built to compete and it's not really built to tear down either. Trading away picks right now would be monumentally stupid though. That much is clear. They've got some guys who might be useful to contenders though ... Dumoulin, Zucker, maybe Guentzel and McGinn. Other than Guentzel those guys aren't getting you anywhere right now and maybe you can cobble together some picks while freeing up money for the summer. Because, what's your best case otherwise? Squeak into the playoffs and get hammered in the first round by a real contender? Whoo pee doo

Rossi’s column specifically mentions Dumoulin in the context of trading for Chychrun. Dumoulin has been playing on the top pair with Letang but he’s a UFA after the season and unlikely to be re-signed by the Pens. Maybe we can come full circle and pick him up for couch change, or a conditional 7th rounder or the ever popular future considerations.

I doubt the Pens will want to trade inside the Division, but if he's available then Dumoulin would be an upgrade over deHaan on the third pair. He wouldn't address the need for somebody to take the PP point off of Skjei however. Maybe Carolina could wedge their way into a 3 way deal and avoid the Pens trading directly to a competitor

Them trading for Chychrun would give me pause though. He's cheap enough to be a good fit, but they'd be crazy to spend the assets required to trade for the guy. Multiple 1st rounders? For a team that badly needs cheap ELC help for the next couple of years? Pass. They should be dumping players for picks, not trading away picks.

That’s the conflict between Sullivan and Hextall. The Yotes want picks, Hextall doesn’t want to give them up. They’re not that dissimilar to Washington. They’re only 1 point apart in the standings, with the Pens holding 3 games in hand. But the Caps recognized the reality of the situation and waved the white flag. Sullivan apparently has hopes of making the playoffs, so he’s not ready to give up yet, but realistically, their window is all but closed. They have Crosby for 2 years after this and Malkin for 3. And a pretty bare cupboard behind them, Scott Wheeler ranked them 29th in his prospect pool rankings.

Their smart move would be to trade Crosby and Malkin and whoever else for picks and prospects now while they can get value back. They could maybe get into the playoffs but I don’t think there’s any chance of them doing much there. Probably get smoked in the first round.

Well, that ain't happening. They both have full no movement clauses, very likely both have no desire to leave and Malkin's contract is particularly dumb. Same with Letang's deal, especially given his health concerns. The Pens have a few guys that can move for draft assets, but their core group are all on boat anchor contracts. That's why moving draft assets for a guy like Chychrun would be especially reckless for them. Yeah, he'd make them better in the short run but that deal would all but cap lock them this summer (remembering they have to cough up for a goalie) and maybe next year too. And he wouldn't even make them all that much better.

Bleacher Report tweeted that the Pens are putting Kasperi Kapanen on waivers. If he isn’t claimed and they send him to the AHL, they’d get $2.075 million of cap relief, they have to retain $1.125 million under the Wade Redden rule.

They've been trying to move him for awhile now, so no shock there.

Panthers goalie Spencer Knight is entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistsnce Program. That explains the Alex Lyon recall on Wednesday.

Rangers trade forward Vitali Kravtsov to Vancouver for forward William Lockwood and a 2026 7th round pick. Lockwood is on a 1 year, 2 way deal and was playing for Abbotsford in the AHL.

Rangers clearing cap space for Kane.

That’s all they got for former first rounder Kravtsov? Some Ranger fans were convinced he was the centerpiece of the Kane deal…🤣

Kane left the team in California and flew back to Chicago. It’s imminent, apparently.

Cross another forward off the list. Nashville sends Nino to Winnipeg for a 2024 2nd rounder.
