2022-2023 NHL Misc. Thread

I mean, the Rangers haven't added anyone they can afford to keep past this season. They're set to be good for exactly as long as their three big contract forwards can keep up their production ... two of whom are already over 30. They're set up to be good, but I don't know about stacked. Jersey? We'll see if they can get Meier extended, but yeah ... they've been rebuilding for a while and are set to be a contender for the next phase. Their goaltending is still an issue though and they've got more than just Meier's contract to worry about this summer ... just to tread water.

I'm not saying it's nothing ... but I'm not saying those two are juggernauts for the next 5 years either. I just don't think the sky has fallen, and I know exactly how popular that makes me on the internet.
I certainly didnt say the sky is falling...far from it!

Toronto keeps emptying the cupboards…they’re going to be like Pitt in the near future, without the Cups to show for it.
They now dont have a second round pick till 2027...and two of the next three firsts already spoken for too...Scooby Dubas is all chips in at the table for the Leafs already knowing he cant go home to his wife!!!

Leafs get 2 more years of Jake McCabe on the cheap after this season. That is useful for their cap management the next 2 seasons.

I would rather have McCabe on my roster than Dylan Coghlan, but I'm not trading a 1st round pick for him even with 50% retention. But Dubas doesn't care about the 1st round picks. If the Leafs don't beat Tampa in the first round this season Dubas won't be around Toronto to not make those picks.

OK, then you just blew a 1st and 2nd rounder for nothing then. Enjoy
Most of the top teams in the East are all spending 1sts and 2nds to improve their teams even further but I’ve seen it suggested quite a few times in this thread that our D sucks and it just hasn’t been true this year by any measure.

Meh. The only reason everyone is infatuated with Meier is because he was the biggest name being shopped. He wasn’t worth overpaying for or trading in your future for.

Our D is fantastic actually. We could use a better 7 slot and an upgrade on PP 2 point maybe but otherwise they’re lights out. Plus good offensive punch.

Leafs are top 10 overall defensively. Their Dmen themselves are good, but also, like the Canes, the forwards are asked to play attention to backchecking and coverage. The Leafs play solid team defense and even their offensive superstars are pretty relentless defensively. Matthews and Marner are both very good defensively (5v5 for Matthews, Marner just pesters the heck out of you no matter what the situation is).

I don't think Jake McCabe really does enough to improve what the Leafs have already to warrant trading a 1st round pick for him. But we all know how important D depth is for the playoffs. McCabe gives them that and some flexibility for the next 2 seasons.

They are carrying 8 D now…yeah have to wonder if they might consider moving a guy like Holl or Sandin before Friday.

From what I’ve read from various people, Nikita Okhotyuk, who one of the dmen that the Devils included in thr Meier trade is NHL ready now and has top pair potential. That’s not an arrow that Waddell had in his quiver. Nikishin is several years away from even moving to North America and Morrow is a college sophomore with holes in his game.

I didn't say it sucked ... I said I thought McCabe would help.

San Jose got two puck moving D prospects that they can slot in next season. Carolina didn't have anything like that, even if they had thrown Nikishin into a deal since he can;t come over until 2025. And from what I've been able to gather, it sounds like the Canes intend for Nikishin to step right into their Top 4 when they can get him signed. Not something to throw away casually, seeing as how that's not even a stretch based on how he's playing in Russia and that they don't have a single NHL defenseman currently signed through 25-26.

Thus, the Canes deal HAD to have been built on a different set of parts and assumptions. Which is why I made that comment to Christer a while back. It's impossible to compare these things without knowing the details because the composition of the package absolutely had to be different. At the end of the day, New Jersey has been in rebuild mode for a while and has accumulated a lot of quality prospects. They were able to jam up the deal with a bunch of guys the Sharks wanted without touching NJ's own most highly valued prospects. That speaks to both quantity and quality ... and the comparative stage of the two programs. Carolina probably could have swung that deal two or three years ago.

McCabe fills their Musing role. Was Muzzin the reason they haven’t gotten further in playoffs?? 😳
I'd say no, but maybe the fact that they've consistently over-slotted Muzzin has been a factor. I dunno. Playing Leafs roster whisperer is above my pay grade
