Jackson Blake and the US swamped Nikita Quapp and the Germans in the quarters of the World Juniors, 11-1. Blake had his first goal of the tournament, Quapp gave up 8 goals in 28 shots before being relieved after 2 periods.
Anyone get to see the Conner Bedard show last night in the late game vs Slovakia? That kid is just sick with the puck on his stick...absolutely filthy.

Only highlights. I've not seen a prospect with that kind of puck skills since McDavid. This draft is deeper than just Bedard too. Could be a special draft class.

Wolves final 2 games last week:

Dec 30 Rockford L 4-3 (shootout) Sawchenko with the loss. Lagesson, Stromwall and Josh Melnik with the goals. Shootout shooters for Wolves were Stromwall (No goal), Drury (Goal), Gunler (No goal), Pashin (Goal), Honka (No goal), and Ponomarev (No goal)

Dec 31 @Rockford L 6-2 Cale Morris with the loss. Stromwall scored both goals.

Not that they get much support, but Sawchenko is 7-9-1 with a 3.62 GAA and .885 Sv%. Cale Morris is 1-4-2, 5.21 and .843. When Kotchetkov was there he went 2-2-1, 3.00 and .911

3 Home games this week. v. Iowa Tue, and then v. Cleveland Fri and Sat

Jackson Blake and the US team picked up the Bronze medal in the WJC, 8-7 over Sweden in OT. Chaz Lucius, whose brother Cruz is a Canes draftee, scored the winner. Blake had a goal and 5 assists in the tournament.

Canes Proselects tweeted that Robert Orr was traded by Gatineau to Acadie-Bathurst. Gatineau has a slim lead in the West Divsion, Acadia-Bathurst is 3rd in the Maritimes Division, 7 points behind Moncton and 4 ahead of Cape Breton and Charlottetown.

Massimo Rizzo was named NCHC Forward of the Week. He has a 9 game point streak.

What’s his story? He is never mentioned as a top prospect. Is his skating poor? Is he a small guy? Poor hockey sense? He’s a point a game player, even as a freshman.

He's never really been a high level prospect coming up so expectations are low. I think he's a solid college player but doesn't really look like he's got an NHL frame unless he fills out. That's fine if you've got the kind of puck skills that Jackson Blake has, but that doesn't seem to be Rizzo's game. Plus, he a low round pick who hung around Junior A before college. When you never play major junior, you tend to fly under the radar.

Also, lots of guys score in college who don't stand a chance in heck of carrying that to the pro level. So ... yeah. We'll see. Another similar player is Kevin Wall at Penn State. Similar background, although he's American, similar production in college.

Wall and Rizzo were drafted in the same year, 35 picks apart in 2019. Wall had a big year in Junior A his last season with 31 goals. He went straight to Penn St. for the 2019-20 season. Rizzo never had more than 19 goals in the same league that Wall played in. He also played 1 more year in junior, then missed the 2020-21 season. Wall is also a bit bigger. He’s a senior, so we’ll see what happens after Penn St.’s season ends, whenever that is.

Yeah, with dudes like that the upside is probably a Chad LaRose/Craig Adams kind of thing where they grind around for awhile and find their way onto a pro roster by showing up at camp and out-working 20 guys. It helps to have a pro frame, and that's apparently always going to be an issue for Rizzo. Wall at least looks like he can take a beating. Plus, Wall has had a knack for timely goals in college. That never hurts.

Max Lajoie will represent the Wolves at the AHL All Star Game. Pretty sad commentary on the state of the team right now.

Can't we send them a suitcase of money and get him over sooner than later. ;)
Sadly no ... even though God knows the Canes could use a decent left shot D right now. Plus, keep in mind that the level of play in the KHL has nosedived post sanctions. It's basically a flashier version of the AHL at this point.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and the league will fold under the weight of the sanctions against the various oligarchs?
