Wolves last week:

Apr 5 @Milwaukee W 6-5(OT) Kochetkov with the win. Honka, Joseph LaBate, Lagesson, MacEachern, and Ponomarev x2 with the goals.
Apr 7 @Iowa W 4-1 Sawchenko with the win. Suzuki x2, Rees and MacEachern with the goals.
Apr 8 Iowa L 3-2 (OT) Kochetkov with the loss. Suzuki and MacEachern with the goals.

4 games this week (the final week of the AHL regular season): Tue @Rockford, Fri @Milwaukee, Sat v. Grand Rapids, Sun v. Manitoba

One point behind Rockford with each team having 4 to play. Obviously that game tomorrow night is huge. 4 points behind Iowa. Iowa has 3 to play.

Sounds like Chicago is signing their Terrier, now it's time for the 'Canes to do the same thing

That’s Chicago as in Blackhawks not Wolves, signing Fensore’s teammate, goalie Drew Commesso.
They really, really need Commesso to be decent ... which means they should keep him miles and miles away from their current roster.

I’ll put this here because it’s the most obvious outcome…

Frank Seravalli tweeted that Skyler Brind’Amour will not be signing with Edmonton. He becomes a free agent on August 15.

I would be ok with signing Skyler just because, but until this past season his college numbers are beyond underwhelming (104 Games 9 Goals 35 assists in his first 3 years for QU). He broke out for 14G 18A in 41 games this season. He might end up in the ECHL if we sign him and are sharing an affiliate next season.

Skyler turns 24 years old this summer. He only gets a 1 year entry level contract. The age that governs the length of entry level contracts is the age of the player on September 15th of the calendar year the player signs, regardless of his actual age when he actually signs. So if Skyler's 24th birthday was September 16th or later, his entry level contract would be 2 years if he signed any time this year. But he turns 24 before September 15th, which puts him in the 1 year ELC category.

Without the family connection, his normal path would be to sign on with an ECHL team and try to grow into the pro game that way. And he might still do that. Carolina's never been a particularly sentimental outfit under Dundon, although he obviously has a soft spot for Brindy.

Elliotte Friedman says he’s hearing the Canes have a great shot to sign UFA goalie Yaniv Perets from Quinnipiac. His numbers the last 2 seasons are other-worldly.

21/22: 22-5-2, 1.17 GAA, .939 sv%
22/23: 34-4-3, 1.49 GAA, .931 sv%

Is he actually as good as his record or at his age, was it more of a case of him being a man among boys on the rink?

He’s not that old, he just turned 23 in March. His numbers have been pretty good at all levels but he took a circuitous route to get to Quinnipiac. He played 2 years in the Ontario Provincial Junior A league, then moved to Boston for another Junior A League, but not the USHL or NAHL, more akin to the league the Junior Hurricanes play in. Then he went off to British Columbia, where he succeeded Jack LaFontaine at Penticton. Finally his 2 years at Quinnipiac.

All young goalies are generally crapshoots.

There was no fanfare about Yaniv Perets when he was younger and he was never drafted by anyone. Goalies on really good NCAA teams can put up some epically awesome numbers (Jack LaFontaine 20-21 1.79 GAA .934 Sv%). It's impossible to say if they will be successful pros.

Given the Canes really have no one in the pipeline behind Kochetkov that could be considered a more than likely NHL goaltender at this stage, taking a very low risk flier on Perets seems like a smart thing to do. We don't even need to spend a draft pick, the only capital invested is the $225k the kid gets paid in the minors and as a signing bonus. The only question will be if Perets ends up our #4 or #5 next season and where he will be playing next year.

Yeah, goalies are weird. Perets took a freaking Rand McNally tour of North America, always chasing playing time. Eventually he found a good fit in the NCAA and had the goods to back it up. Does that mean he'll be a solid pro? Maybe, maybe not ... but it means he's willing to work for it. And like Cmal said ... Carolina badly needed a goalie in the system and the buy-in for a college UFA is pretty low.
