2023-24 Canes Misc Thread

The only thing I've had gastric problems with in ages is rare beef because I eat so little of it.

One more note on local ice cream…the Howling Cow’s Mothership location next to the NC State cattle farm off Lake Wheeler Road is our family’s go to spot this past summer. All their best flavors in just about every cone, sundae and banana split combo imaginable is a real ice cream lover’s delight. Worth a visit if you like their stuff!

How much do you guys work out? Holy smokes you’re making me want ICE CREAM!!!

I had excellent chocolate ice cream and brownies for dessert tonight and my stomach is still hallucinating how good it was. Happy to see how much wisdom & knowledge is shared here. Gracias!

Sorry to hear about the lactose intolerance, NoMich....

Kochetkov was on the bench in street clothes for practice and Halak wasn’t there, so Jorge Alves was dressed. There was also a new wrinkle on the PP, per Walt Ruff, Slavin took at least 3 turns in that spot.

PP1: Aho, Jarvis, Necas, and Teravainen with DeAngelo (Slavin)
PP2: Bunting, Kotkaniemi, Noesen, and Svechnikov with Burns

Kochetkov had a maintenance day. Halak and the Canes mutually agreed to terminate his PTO.

It has been a bit strange to see Burns get a reduced PP role with TDA around. Burns has done from 3:00 PP TOI/Game last season to 2:24 this season.

TDA averaged 3:03 a couple of seasons ago and this season is at 3:25.

Now I know our PP struggled some last season, and Burns is 38 years old, but I'm surprised that the Canes have elected to give TDA the PP1 unit ice time over Burns. I appreciate that we want to reduce Burns minutes a bit (he has gone from 23:13 last season to 21:51 this season), but I'm still surprised the Canes have been willing to hand TDA the reigns to PP1 after the season Burns had last year.

I'm taking Slavin getting a bit of time on PP1 that the Canes might be thinking about cycling TDA out of the lineup more frequently for Chatfield. If that ends up being the case, I don't expect Slavin to really play with Aho, Jarvis, Necas and Turbo (that will be Burns moving to that spot I would think).

It will be interesting to see if the Canes continue to shop for a third goaltending option or pounce on one that may try to be slipped through waivers...guys like Martin Jones and Cayden Primeau come to mind, Raanta has always been one to get nicked up frequently and who knows when Freddy may be back.

I'm not at all surprised to see them cut back Burns' special teams minutes. He was good enough running PP1, but was more of a facilitator/distributor and without big shot options on the wings, a lot of what he created went awry. And with the Canes running a pretty one dimensional PP, it kind of fell apart as the post season went along. Which is a familiar refrain. Combined with the practicality of limiting his ice time as a nod to his age, they needed a shakeup.

What has been surprising is that they looked to be gearing up to use DeAngelo in the trigger role on one wing with Orlov up top for the entirety of the pre season, only to abandon it immediately once the real games started. Orlov has similar skills to Burns when it comes to keeping the puck in and distributing with about the same level of shooting skill. Thus far, he's largely been wasted on special teams while also struggling to find himself 5v5, and you have to wonder how frustrated he is ... and how much that's impacting his overall play. One thing about Brindy's "gotta earn it" thing ... sometimes he hurts the offense with that stuff. Dougie didn't take off in Raleigh until Brind'Amour finally started to let him loose on the PP, which freed up his overall game. I get it, and far be it from me to question success ... but the PP has been hit and miss for his entire tenure, so ... yeah. Similarly, Bunting has looked good on the PP while struggling 5v5, which has limited is PP looks ... which is tough to understand, honestly. Playing him with Noesen on PP2 puts your two best net front guys on the same unit ... which, to me, makes little sense.

I think they almost have to been looking at another No. 2/3 option at his point.

I mean, TDA to the press box? What other explanation could there be? If TDA is not running a PP, he shouldn't be in the lineup at all.
