2023-24 NHL Misc. Thread

I was thinking about your kidneys and liver based on your history of posts LJG...glad you provided the disclaimer... 🍻
One of our office managers (the worst one, may she drop dead and rot in hell) once quipped after one of my stories, "Do all your stories involve drugs or alcohol?' Pretty much.

I recalled one of my escapades a few years ago after dinner w/ wife and another couple. I've known him since the 80s and his wife since the 90s. Anyway, the wives just dropped their jaws and had an "I can't believe what I just heard" look on their faces. Dude laughed because he was part of the story. F'd if I know how or why we ended up with either of them.

LeBrun says that Bettman told the Board of Governors that preliminary revenue projections suggest a salary cap of $87 - 88 million next year.

Habs put Joel Armia on waivers. He has 2 years left at $3.4 million AAV but the actuals are nuts, at $8.6 million the next 2 years.

The Slugs signed Rasmus Dahlin to a 8 year/$11 million AAV extension. That will tie him with Drew Doughty for the 2nd highest cap hit among dmen.

Ooof that's a bad contract. It would be a bad contract at paper value, but the cash imbalance makes it just radioactive. Everybody focuses on the big obvious stuff, but it's that kind of thing that ends up biting a team in the arse as much as anything else.

I’ve seen a couple of writers speculate that he’s tradeable if the Habs are willing to eat half the salary. That’s still a big ask. And the Habs only have 1 retained earnings slot left with Edmundson this year and Petry for 2 years.

Dahlin gets a $t million signing bonus in year 1 with $8 million salary. The rest of the contract is salary and slides from 1 year at $12 million, 3 years at $11 million and the last 3 at $10 million.

Sure ... so long as a team that has a printing press in the basement wants him. The question would be why? He's a perfectly decent depth forward, but there's a hundred guys who can do what he does for less.

That's such a small slide on scale that I wonder why anyone even bothered. Agents, man. Doing ineffective fancy crap to prove their worth since the dawn of time.

The Jets signed Mark Schiefele and Connor Hellebuyck to 7 year extensions at $8.5 million AAV

Is that a Minny Wild redo like the Suter/Parise cap hell debacle for Winnipeg? Both those guys are fine for a couple more years but what about years 3/4/5/6/7? I think both should have been no more than 3/4 max.

I think worse than Suter/Parise. Schiefele turns 31 in March, Hellebuyck in May. Suter and Parise were a lot younger than the Jets pair. The contracts ran into their 40s, but they started when they were at a reasonable age.

Reading all the pundits predictions, might as well hand the Cup to Edmonton and not bother with the season.

Frank Seravalli says the Jackets are shopping Jake Bean. He’s the lowest paid dman on their roster at $2.3 million. And he’s still overpaid.

I started a prediction thread ... go make those guys look like the Chumps they are :0)

BTW, ESPN is starting the power rankings with Vegas and Colorado 1/2. When those guys invest in a franchise, they REALLY stick with the narrative.

The Carolina Hurricanes begin the NHL season as the consensus betting favorites to win the Stanley Cup at sportsbooks.

The Hurricanes are the Cup favorites at 15-2 at Caesars Sportsbook, followed by the Colorado Avalanche (8-1), Edmonton Oilers (8-1) and Toronto Maple Leafs (9-1). The New Jersey Devils are 10-1, and the defending-champion Vegas Golden Knights are 12-1.

We normally put $20 on the Canes to win the Cup every year. I expect to do the same this season, although Vegas at 12-1 seems like a better bet.
