Losing Rantanen for nothing will be a BAD look for Tulsky. That's a massive, massive bad move
Not any worse than losing that penguin guy last year.Losing Rantanen for nothing will be a BAD look for Tulsky. That's a massive, massive bad move
That’s why many teams would have only made that move as a sign and trade to avoid this current scenario. We all have heard how surprised the player was when he was traded out of Colorado, and I know the Canes like to be bold with some of their acquisitions but the risk of where things stand right now was going to be high with the cap going up and the fact the guy is a premier player and those do not make it to the open market very often. If this turns out to be another rental only move this is far worse than the Guentzel scenario…the assets given up for Rants far exceeded the mostly spare parts lost for Guentzel. Not any worse than losing that penguin guy last year.
The only leverage we have is if he wants to play here. He can get similar money lots of other places if he waits or more from the Canes. There is no upside for him to sign now other than putting up garbage numbers hurts his value or a serious injury. If he was my kid I’d tell him to wait. Well if I didn’t live in NC. There’s almost no downside risk for him. Wait til he’s a UFA and let the bidding war begin and choose your team.
I know I promised to shut up on this, but that scenario is only some sort of disaster if the club doesn't use the cap space to make the roster better. And what evidence is these to suggest that they wouldn't do that? There isn't any. The doom and gloom stuff is self-inflicted at this point.Losing Rantanen for nothing will be a BAD look for Tulsky. Like a moth to the flame.I know I promised to shut up on this, but ....
Yeah, I'm actually gonna stop now. I'm finding this whole conversation increasingly tediousLike a moth to the flame.![]()
It’s on Fandual. Odds are against you.Yeah, I'm actually gonna stop now. I'm finding this whole conversation increasingly tedious
Maybe true but there’s nothing to indicate that. Rantanan would be a fool to sign now unless he really wants to be here a lot.If Rantanen is not signed or traded by next Friday, I fully expect he is signing elsewhere. The only questions left will be 'who trades for his signing rights and do the Canes only get another 3rd round pick in return? AND 'Do the Canes win the Cup?'
Rather have Guentzel back. Trade him to Tampa bayAnd there it is, Rantanen to the Leafs. It was only a matter of time.....

NHL insider speculates Mikko Rantanen's interest in playing with Auston Matthews could 'close door' for $65,408,000 Leafs star
NHL insider Darren Dreger discussed how Mikko Rantanen’s free agency plans could affect Mitch Marner’s future with the Toronto Maple Leafs.www.sportskeeda.com
You will regret that contract 5 minutes after the ink driesFWIW, reports out of Toronto indicate that Carolina made Rantanen an offer on a contract extension either during or right after the 4 Nations break. It was reported as "9 figures", and he's supposedly thinking about it. It's obvious the info came from his agent, confirming my suspicions about what was driving the reports we saw during 4 Nations.
If I had to guess, the Canes probably gave him a starting position rather than a drop dead number. There's no reason for the info to be presented as this "in the 9 digit range" nonsense unless the agent is downplaying the number, which means the Canes likely offered the full term at a logical market value. If he was actually offended by it, you'd hear completely different noises. For the record, $100 million would be $12.5 million AAV by 8 years, which is pretty much what Rantanen supposedly wanted from Colorado ... although there have been conflicting reports on that.
Exactly contenders dont have the cap space to ink him or will fuck up their internal cap even tryingFrom my simple fan perspective, the Canes make a strong case for Rantanen. It boils down to two basic elements, relevance in the form of contending and capacity to stay stay contenders.
The Canes are a team that can do both those things now— win now and pay the guy what he wants. The Canes are relevant and with their current core and prospects, will likely stay relevant.
Other teams that may be able to afford Rantanen are teams that have not been relevant or are in a re-building process or will have to trade away pieces to get there, thus further away from getting a Cup.
My 2cents worth and that at least helps my headspace.
