2024-25 Hurricanes Prospects and Minors Thread

Alexander Nikishin had missed a few games at the start of the season but he’s back. He had a point yesterday, moving him into 2nd all time for points by a dman in SKA history. He has 121 points in 155 games and needs 10 points to break the record held by former Slug Dimitri Kalinin.

Last prospect tournament game today. One of the interesting developments is that Cam Abbott is using Felix Unger Sorum as a center, between Nadeau and Gunler. IIRC, FUS has always been a winger. So this could add a little twist to camp competition. It’s probably also a preview of Chicago’s top line. The 2nd line has SBA between Trikozov and Blake.

Again, I beg of you all ... come up with a knick-name if you must, but I'm NEVER going to know who you're talking about with the FUS/SBA stuff. Even if you previously referred to the guy by name. My brain immediately starts trying to figure out what league you're talking about.

This prospect group is giving off serious "cardiac canes" vibes from years back. They have started every game down 2 in the first.

Maybe ... I like the fight-back they've shown, but I'm a bit concerned about the lack of defensive zone coverage and the fact that it keeps creeping in early. That AIN'T how this system works.

Regular season hockey is back (for some)!

I thought I saw a report earlier in the summer that Hamrla had signed with a team in the Czech 2nd division. Or was that Vondras?

That was Vondras (who I just updated on the main tracker).

I've heard nothing and seen nothing about Hamrla, although I see today that DobberProspects claimed in April 2024 that Hamrla is under contract to Ilves in Liiga for one more season. Their season already started and Hamrla is not on their roster. EliteProspects listed Hamrla as 'leaving' Ilves on April 24, 2024 with the 'To' as unknown, which I'm taking as he was released from whatever obligation Ilves had made to him. So I do believe he might be 'in the wind' at the moment, which seems kind of hard to understand given the opportunities worldwide for goalies. I'm wondering if he gave up being a pro hockey player? His disappearance is much harder to understand than Yegor Naumov's.

Also Naumov has gone MIA again, he is no longer on that Belarus team's roster.

Scott Wheeler at The Athletic is out with his top players under 23. The Canes have 4 players on the list. Alexander Nikishin and Seth Jarvis are listed as All Stars, which is the 3rd of 5 groups, behind MVP (Bedard Is the only one) and Franchise. Bradly Nadeau and Scott Morrow are in the Support group, the lowest group. His Franchise players, which he defines as a top 30 player, the best player on a contending team or the 2nd best player on a championship caliber team are Macklin Celebrini, Matvei Michkov, Tim Stutzle, Adam Fantilli, Wyatt Johnston, Brock Faber and Leo Carlsson. I think I’d like to see Celebrini and Michkov actually play a few games before listing them in that group, but maybe that’s just me.

Yeah, both Celebrini and Michkov have shown enough in their play thus far to warrant the ranking, I think. Pretty rare for guys with those kinds of resumes to whiff. It happens, of course but not as much as you'd think. Frankly, I find Stutzle and Carlsson to be slightly more suspect on that tier. I wasn't impressed with Stutzle's 23-24 season ... especially his 18 goals in massively heavy usage. And while Carlsson is really slick, I'm not sold on him upping his production enough to be on that level right now. I'm waiting for consistent traction from him, as opposed to big flashes for a couple of shifts every game. For me, he's a candidate for the Marty Necas "obviously very skilled but still waiting for it to click" level.

I'm also thinking Nikishin is starting to be a bit under-rated. There's absolutely zero reason based on his play for his stock to be slipping and it wasn't long ago that he was widely considered a lock to be an impact first pairing guy right out of the box. Sometimes it's just a matter of boredom/impatience for list makers and several Russians have taken so long to get to the NHL that they slip a bit. Same thing happens to guys who stick in college a year too long. If Faber is a franchise player, so is he.

Nikishin has been the best overall dman for a couple of KHL seasons now. He is pretty much a unicorn in the KHL. Dynamic offensively and responsible, physical and "mean" on the defensive side. There is nothing in his play the last 2 seasons in the KHL that doesn't project to a potential 1st pair/1st PP dman in the NHL. He is good, really good. I don't expect that to change in the NHL.

Me either. If his stock is slipping, it's purely because he's getting stale to the people making lists. If anything, his clips from this season show that he's getting more and more efficient, especially when it comes to the physicality. I haven't seen seemingly effortless hitting like that very often. His skating efficiency and body control are a little bit uncanny, honestly.

The South Carolina Stingrays traded the rights to dman Bryce Montgomery to the Bloomington Bison for future considerations. The Canes have a working agreement with the Bison this season.

And that Future Considerations guy sure does get around, he’s in the ECHL too?

Montgomery has an AHL/ECHL deal directly with the Chicago Wolves this season, but this transaction seems to indicate that he might not spend a minute with Chicago.

The Canes have Montgomery's rights until June 1, 2025 when he will most likely become a UFA as far as the NHL is concerned. I will continue to track his ECHL exploits for this final season as a Canes prospect.
