2024-25 NHL Misc. Thread

Utah are no joke, so long as the goaltending shows/holds up. They've got two legitimately dangerous scoring lines and Sergachev was a big upgrade on defense. With a far more normal support structure, they're really well positioned to take a big jump. Not sure how big, but they're not the sadsack Coyotes anymore.

Oh, no, it looks like the Sabres are sputtering...again. Hate to see it for K. Adams, the Sabres organization, not so much. I thought Lindy Ruff had it this time.

It's early days yet, but their off season was weird and they're absolutely not built to compete right now. It's impossible to feel sorry for that fan base, but they obviously have a screwed up management structure and it doesn't look like the Pegulas really care that much so long as their operating costs stay low. Now that they've solved the Arizona riddle, this might be the worst ownership setup in the NHL.

Apparently the Oilers are trying to replicate last year's horrible start followed by a dominant surge.

3 Home games to start the season:

Winnipeg 6-0 Loss
Chicago 5-2 Loss
Calgary 4-1 Loss

Flyers in Edmonton tomorrow.

Skinner scored his first goal as an Oiler yesterday. 3 Games 1 Goal 1 Assist -1 That is actually pretty good, McDavid is -5

Another goalie gets paid, Dallas signed Jake Oettinger to an 8 year extension at $8.25 million AAV. Seravalli says it’s the same structure as Swayman’s deal.

I've always like Otter and he's got a deeper resume than Swayman, but I can't help feeling that a bridge deal would have been in Dallas' best interests here. Still, he's a darned fine goalie even if he doesn't have a consistent higher gear.

KHL Barys Astana terminated the contracts of several imported players, including Wade Allison, Nathan Beaulieu, Will Butcher, Chase De Leo, Alex Grant, Michael McLeod and Canes legend CJ Smith. So AHL contracts possibly incoming for all but McLeod, he’s one of the London 5 accused of sexual assault. Barys sits DFL in the KHL with 7 points from 16 games, built on 2 regulation wins, 1 OT win and 1 OT loss

Zawyer Sports and Entertainment was granted an ECHL expansion franchise to begin playing in the 2025-26 season. They’ll play at the Greensboro Coliseum. They’ll be the 3rd ECHL team that Zawyer owns outright, along with the Jacksonville Icemen and Savannah Ghost Pirates. They are also non owner operations consultants for the ECHL Tahoe Knight Monsters, which are part owned by Tim Tebow, who is also an investor in Zawyer. They also own the Charlotte Checkers, having taken majority ownership in July.

I hadn't heard that the naming rights for the Greensboro Coliseum had been sold to First Horizon. Apparently it was annouced earlier this month...

Oak View Group took over operation of the complex too. They own and/or operate more than 50 arenas across the US and Canada including Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle and PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh. They also operate the Crown Complex in Fayetteville.

All 32 teams are playing tonight and ESPN/ESPN2/ESPN+ has all of them, starting at 6 with Caps/Flyers and Wild/Panthers and ending with a 11:00 Kings/Vegas game

This flew under the radar a bit. Jeff Vinik sold a majority interest in the Tampa Bay Lightning that values the club at $1.8 billion. He bought the team for $93 million in 2010. Yesterday, full time employees of the Vinik Sports Group were informed that they’re receiving a bonus of between $50,000 - 66,000. There are more than 300 employees.

Larry Brooks says the Rangers and Alexis Lafreniere are closing in on a 7 year deal with a $7.6 million AAV.

So, a three year transitional period before Vinik hands control to the new majority group. That basically coincides with the basic window before they'll be forced to start over rebuilding an NHL roster. Kucherov will be out of contract, Guentzel, Point and Hedman will be well north of their primes and 90% of the rest of that roster will be made of pre-wrap by then. He's been a terrific owner for a franchise that sorely needed stable management. Good on him for taking care of his staff and for knowing he doesn't have the stomach to start all over again.
