Around the League: 2019-2020 Regular Season

No doubt he is a great coach, but he treats players like shit. Chelios hated him, the Modano 1 game short of 1500 due to Babcock ego comes to mind. If you spur hatred in others, modern day social media will allow an avenue for haters to express their anger.

Plenty of players hated Scotty Bowman. He's as good as they come.

Even more hated Ken Hitchcock & Mike Keenan. They got results (a little less so for Keenan, but still) and moved on a lot. If memory serves me right, Roger Neilson was another one that wasn't particularly popular.

There's a long list of excellent coaches that are hated. How many "players coaches" had long, illustrious careers?

The "Mike Babcock is a terrible human being" narrative does nothing for me. So he didn't let Mike Modano get his 1,500th game... okay? So? I'd much rather look towards his charitable work in regards to mental health than what he did as a coach.

Mike Commodore and Chris Chelios aren't exactly the barometers of who is & isn't a good human being. They're no saints.

This was amusing at first and Commodore likes the attention. Now he's looking like a stalker.

He looks like someone who is starving for any kind of attention. Again, what would he be remembered for if not his Anti-Babcock rhetoric? He's the guy with the Ginger 'Fro. That's it.

Yeah he's enjoying the attention he gets but the schtick is getting old.

I’ve yet to hear any player say they love Bill Belichick, but they sure like the winning part, just sayin...

I am not disputing the Chelios Commodore point in full agreement.. Work atmospheres change as time moves forward. Hitchcock looked awful in Edmonton. The team makeup has to be right for authoritarian coaches to succeed in the modern nhl. The young generation isn't will to accept what prior ones would. Keenan ran out of chances, Torterella probably will too.

I know Babcock is a fantastic coach but I don't rate him in Bowman's league. My judgment is based on the Stanley cup success, that is all that matters to me. International competition success is nice but it is a different animal. Babs had a good number of years where he had a stacked team and only won one cup. That pattern was repeating in Toronto the past two seasons.

Comodore is a nobody , sour grapes. I must admit I got a chuckle out of it. I think some level of adaption from coaches is needed as leagues change. I suspect Babcock will be coaching another cup contending team before long. I also suspect Toronto will turn its season around.

Babcock's problem was not that he was hated but that he clung to old school hockey -- dump and chase, shoot from the point, that ignores the new skill focused NHL. He became an overpaid Michel Therrien and now Keefe has a chance to Blysma his ass.

Even looking back, Babcock won 1 Cup with a dynasty type team. He got knocked out of the first round several times with the Wings (not to mention the Leafs)

The most adorable thing on right now is Mike Commodore's petty rant about Mike Babcock.

Mike Babcock will be remember as one of the (if not the) best coaches of this era. Opened the door to coaches getting big contracts with his $50M deal. When his time is done, he'll be in the HHOF. His name will be mentioned for decades to come.

Mike Commodore will be remembered as a depth NHLer who had a big ginger afro and for hating Mike Babcock.

Good job, Mike Commodore. You really showed him!

not sure if it is true but i heard that they hated each other

and when doing drills in practice when it was commodore next up on the drill babcock would blow the whistle and end the drill

haha
