Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

not a lot of great scorers have been great defenders. McDavid is a more typical offensive minded player than Matthews is. a good chunk of them give no fucks on D.

Not just Matthews, but Marner too. And JT and Willy have also bought in.

Not sure how many other teams have 4 elite offensive forwards that are also in the top 20 percent of defensive forwards.

The knives are out for Woodcraft today. Things not going well in Oil Country

Thing is I am pretty sure (not totally sure) that Woodcraft is actually good. He proved himself in the AHL and I think he showed his mettle last year before his shitty team tuned him out and the first sign of adversity this year.

All of their previous coaches probably actually sucked, but I think this guy was a good hire.

Of course last night is an extra funny sting because it's one of the Oilers' fired coaches, McLellan, who whupped them last night and has an undertalented team riding far above the oilers in the division right now (and almost beat them in the playoffs even with no Doughty or Fiala).

Holland has to, has to be fired. But then they have to find an actual good GM to replace him and i'm not sure they know how to do it.

meh. plenty of great scorers have decided to play consistently hard on defense and not leak out every chance they get. especially centers.

that shit may have flown in the 80s but you can't get away with it anymore.

and good luck getting your teammates to buy into defense when your best guys don't give a fuck.

I think looking at it as a lack of toughness thing is going to lead to more mistakes here.

I fucking love it.

One of the more peculiar results of the rise of analytics is the backlash it triggered - huge swaths of the hockey community and even management have been so triggered by the nerds that they've willingly dumbed down their hockey analysis to far below Don Cherry levels. They have decided that the only stat that matters is POINTS and that other than SCORING POINTS the only other important thing in hockey is TOUGHNESS. It hasn't just dumbed down the hockey conversation to idiotic levels but you have a bunch of teams that have just sewered themselves longterm just to spite the nerds. it's hilarious.

The 'Grit" shit is getting ridiculous. There's never been less hitting in the game. It's never been less important. Imagine watching the Oilers' play and say lack of grit is the issue.
That idiot added 2 Ds the Leafs dumped who the hockey world laughed at for being terrible defensively, then he adds Jack campbell with his terrible 2nd half struggles last year.

Their best players are all garbage without the puck and the other half their team is just plain garbage.

Ryan, Kostin, Shore, Foegel, Janmark, Kulak, Ceci, Murray are all replacement level or worse players, plus a bunch of kids that stink/aren't ready for the NHL Holloway, McLeod, Broberg.

Their recipe for success is pass it to McDavid. I'm not sure how far that gets you.

imagine seeing TB and COL win all the cups and still deciding that TOUGHNESS was the key.

I look up and down the roster and I'm not sure they have even one player that can play actual defense.

I think maybe Ceci is the only one that might be somewhat good defensively. And he's Cody Ceci.

Up front i think Ryan used to be good defensively but he's toast at this point.
