20 goals + elite defense > 34 goal floater
I think looking at it as a lack of toughness thing is going to lead to more mistakes here.

The knives are out for Woodcraft today. Things not going well in Oil Country
not a lot of great scorers have been great defenders. McDavid is a more typical offensive minded player than Matthews is. a good chunk of them give no fucks on D.

Edmundson is the answer
The 'Grit" shit is getting ridiculous. There's never been less hitting in the game. It's never been less important. Imagine watching the Oilers' play and say lack of grit is the issue.
That idiot added 2 Ds the Leafs dumped who the hockey world laughed at for being terrible defensively, then he adds Jack campbell with his terrible 2nd half struggles last year.
To be fair.. It is Mark Spector saying this.imagine seeing TB and COL win all the cups and still deciding that TOUGHNESS was the key.
Their best players are all garbage without the puck and the other half their team is just plain garbage.
Ryan, Kostin, Shore, Foegel, Janmark, Kulak, Ceci, Murray are all replacement level or worse players, plus a bunch of kids that stink/aren't ready for the NHL Holloway, McLeod, Broberg.
Their recipe for success is pass it to McDavid. I'm not sure how far that gets you.
Pool party but he is ruined nowI look up and down the roster and I'm not sure they have even one player that can play actual defense.
I think maybe Ceci is the only one that might be somewhat good defensively. And he's Cody Ceci.
Up front i think Ryan used to be good defensively but he's toast at this point.
