This was the year to do it though. Let Malkin and Letang walk. Trade Guentzel and Jarry, and try for the Lemieux -> Crosby -> Bedard.

I can't seem to find it now but I recall some nerd analysis on expected value of rosters vs actual results on coaches over the last decade or so and Lavy came out with the largest gap (in a negative way) by a longshot. He doesn't get the best out of his rosters and would be a huge downgrade on Keefe. Fucking Jonas.

Also generally seems to be a thing that every former star NHLer who tries their hand at being a head coach is shit at it.

Larry Robinson is the only exception to that rule I can think of.

To be fair he’s in a very rare spot of coaching in Montreal with no pressure on him for the foreseeable future
