Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

that's probably all true.

it's just frustrating that when we make decisions like this, we spend the money instead on pure and utter crap anyway.

Yup, but that's a separate issue.

We've done a pretty good job replacing what Leafs Hyman was giving. Our wing situation is now about as good as we can possible expect for how cheap the secondary pieces are. Bertuzzi, Knies, Robertson, Jarnkrok is real, real good wing depth for like 9 millie.

I think the point re: Hyman is that he never would have done that here and it's because he's clicked with a generational playmaker that he's doing it there....and Mitchy is good, but he's no Connor.

Because he didn't do it in his first year in Edmonton either, and showed no sign of this glued to one of the best duos in the world here after a bunch of years together.

We've seen this weirdo magic happen between players before as well. Spezza-Alfie-Heatley were insane for a few years together. Tavares had a few weirdo combinations well out perform expectations for relatively short amounts of time (Remember when Matt Moulson was one of the best goal scorers in the league over a 2-3 year stretch?)

Zach's career high PPP in a season before going to Edmonton was 6. He had 26 last season, and is on pace for the same again this season. Who were we kicking off the 1st PP unit to push Hyman from being a 55-60 point guy to a 80+ point guy?

Well no, that's not true.

If we had re-signed Hyman for eight years, he still eventually would've got to play with McDavid for at least three seasons.

don't need him to be a PPG player at $5m tho.

No, but is 50-55 pt Hyman at 5 million x 8 years a better use of the cap space than Jarnkrok and kids?

"We can and we will" was always about making cost sacrifices based on keeping the 4 big salaries together. Making it on the wing seemed like the best place to do so from a roster composition standpoint and here we are a few years later and we've never missed the Leafs version of Hyman at all.

Hyman was a 30 goal 60 point guy here already and the cap hit for that is pretty good, never mind whatever the hell he is now. Way better than a guy like Krok.

The only reason to not sign him was him falling off given his age, but that was clearly wrong.

Good for Hyman in Edmonton, but he had 5 goals and 13 points over 32 games in the playoffs with Toronto. On that basis the Leafs were perfectly right to let him go, he was not helping here when it mattered and passing on a large financial commitment was the correct decision.

There's always room for $5m players tho.

We have like 4 of them tho

We have 2 of them and both are expiring this summer, which is nice because we're paying our 4 top forwards 47 million dollars next year.

Sacrifices had to be made and a 55-60 point winger was unfortunately one of them.

We could’ve kept Hyman if we wanted to. Nobody wanted that contract, with good reason at the time, and he totally dunked on everyone.

At 5v5 he's more or less the same guy with a Connor bump.

The big difference is his PP usage/production. Which simply wouldn't have happened here. Or put another way, we could have chosen between 80 point Hyman and 80 point Tavares. Because there would only be room for one net front guy on our PP.
