The real problem is it seems like everyone is in on Tanev. The contract probably isn’t 7 *$3 but 4-5 *$4-5 if not worse.

Could, but aging curves are usually aging curves, not aging cliffs. If the last time we saw him a month ago he was real gud, he's likely to be less real gud next year, less real gud the year after. Not real gud to trash without some sort of extenuating circumstance (injuries, etc), which are definitely possible and even more likely as players get older.

They need 2 d not 1. Tanev is the only potentially elite one that they'll be able to afford if they extend the term a bit (in addition to another guy at 5-6m). That's what it comes down to. Can they get two years out of him at a similar level that he played at least year? That's likely the goal. And if it happens, it's a win for the leafs assuming the AAV is in the 3s.
