Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I'm definitely on team "Laine is underrated" but I don't know if I would take the risk on a guy who basically just took a season off for mental health reasons. This might not be the best atmosphere for him. Now, I definitely see why spending his entire career in Winnipeg and Columbus could contribute to that, but is it more likely that the pressure in Toronto just busts him wide open?

I'd take a risk on it, but I don't know if I'd take a Robertson and 10 slots at the top of the draft risk on it. Dude wasn't exactly an asset before all of this.

Can't see it confirmed anywhere yet, but Oilers twitter has 'sploded with suggestions that Leon at 8 x 13.8 is done.

While he only played about 50 games the past two seasons he was at a point per game or just below pace. But that contract, woof.

If you're eventually gonna have to move on from Robertson anyway, and not even giving up a pick, just moving down from 1st to 2nd, it's probably worth the gamble. Especially since in addition to adding the potential of Laine, you are also adding the subtraction of Kampf and Jarnkrok (I don't hate Jarny, but come on).

That being said, it probably does make more sense for him to go to a more low-key environment.

Have we every saved ourselves by not paying a player a year in advance?

It cost us with willy/marner/Matty, contributed to Hyman being too expensive

What exactly has Knies done to deserve 5 milly/year aside from playing on a plum assignment with Matthews/Marner?

Yeah, this is where I'm at. I appreciate the concern, but throwing a bag at him after a good but just good rookie season seems a bit silly to me. Would rather have him give us a real top 6 season first before going long term at real money. Guhle is being played as the Habs #2 defender, I get why they threw money at him. This is not the same.

He's looked great in the playoffs. Very good signs you lock him up now to save $ later.
Also, Crouse gets his ass kissed as some stud power forward (Coyotes players get mad overrated, including our own, OEL). look at his stats...

Y'all need to chill with the hyperbole. He was fine. But 3 points and a -1 in 7 games is not "looking great".

Crouse makes less than is being suggested as the number to throw at Knies. Had a very similar 21 yr old rookie season to what Knies just had, and has been 25/45 for the last 3 seasons. The "pro Crouse" argument isn't that he's a stud, it's that he's probably something similar to what Knies ends up as after he develops.

What are you signing him for long term?

Dom's model has him worth $3 mill, so giving him $5 mill or something is a way bigger gamble than the Guhle/Faber type deals. And unless he has a massive 60 point year how much more would you really have to pay him next year.

6 x $4 would be good if he'd take it.

Its more like what is he going to do and getting ahead of the curve

You make projections and Knies got 15 goals and 35 points with limited PP and overall minutes

Just scratching the surface of his skills and he will play a much bigger role with Bert gone

I remember thew same conversation years ago about Jack Hughes , Brady Tkachuk , Heiskanen etc.....

You rarely get burnt going term with younger core players

They are years away from a trade clause kicking in and if a trade needs to be made , plenty of teams available to take a chance on that player

If you give Knies the Guhle deal and becomes a 60 point player , what the hell is the matter with that
