Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Shocked , he fell off the cliff at 31

There was no gradual decline like many other D

Kind of similar to what happened with Kaberle. Seemed like he played a style of hockey that was well suited to him aging gracefully and being a good player deep into his 30’s.

Instead, he suddenly fell of a cliff in his early 30’s just like Subban.

The Kessel trade was consistent with a full rebuild though. Its nothing like trading for Nylander, its like a rebuilding team trading for Jack Hughes. Kessel is hall of famer that is going to finish with 400+ goals, 1000 points and 2 cups.

The trade didn't turn out nearly as bad as the haters expected when that pick ended up being #2. Solely because Seguin was overrated and Kessel ended up being the best player in the trade. And Seguin was probably so overrated only because it was the Leafs pick. He was a very talented offensive player, but more like a poor mans Phil Kessel than Ron Francis.

If the Leafs didn't make that trade I'm not sure that history turns out any differently. Swapping Kessel for Seguin and Hamilton certainly doesn't turn the 2008-2015 Leafs teams into contenders, not that we would even want that anyway. There is no way I risk butterfly effecting anything about this current Leafs team.

We even traded Phil for more (Kappy, and 1st (Freddy)) than Boston got for Seguin/Hamilton combined (Louie Eriksson, Rielly Smith, 1st (Zach shenshyn)).
When’s the last time a rebuilding team with nothing traded their next three best draft picks for one young winger? It was a bad trade unless you were like neck and neck one of the best teams in the league and mortgaging your future for that final piece to win it all.

Any of the other top 5 forwards up for deals in the next year?

That deal actually sets a pretty good comparable for us to negotiate next offseason. 8x12.x should get the deal done rather quickly

Well there's still two years till Matty goes UFA, so yeah, the stale MacKinnon contract by then won't be any kind of ceiling for him.

Especially after the Leafs' cup wins this year and next.

We already faced the hurt of the big contract hike. Another mil or two won't hurt much.

Now Colorado has to face the hurt for the first time.
