Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

I know why Florida had to make the deal. Signing Huberdeau for 8 years until 38, you're probably getting 3-4 wasted years. Now they have a superstar locked up in his prime, not declining years, like we've done lately. Look at Gally/Price/Weber/Petry and how that worked out for us. But now Florida has no firsts for like 4 years and they aren't that much better, if anything worse.

They probably gave up too much in that deal considering they could have gotten some other salary dumps for nothing.

Fla is a lengthy Barkov injury away from giving the Habs the opportunity of a lottery pick - awful D

keep in mind he’s been a very healthy player thus far in his career

I’d do it for a 6-year deal max (ideally 5) not longer

Ya, no need to lock in these guys for huge deals when even OTT can get Giroux at 6.5. Definitely don't want JH at 6 years unless it's 8m max. We need to learn from our mistakes.

If Calgary's able to re-sign Huberdeau, that's an absolute grand slam for them.

I'm assuming Florida traded him because they didn't think he'd re-sign there?
I'm shocked actually. Huberdeau is Viola's favorite.

Cue Habs 3OA line:

Huberdeau - PLD - Drouin (TVA just creamed their undies)

No way Huberdeau resigns in Cgy … none
Huberdeau has great talent. Id give him six years max with expectations that the final year will be pedestrian.

Also Huberdeau presumably after all this time, is a US resident (and will likely remain so), which means he qualifies for CDN RCA program.

I.e he qualifies for a heavy bonus structured deal which is exempt from Fla state tax because bonus doesn’t count as taxable income in the eyes of the IRS / residents of certain states

Habs would basically get a local francophone but one who’s an American from the contract perspective

Yeah. Gotta love the loopholes.

I've used them. Pretty sure you have too at some point. Taxation wise I mean

Gallagher + Dvorak + 2024 1st + D prospect (not Guhle)

#BringGallagherhometoCgy
I still think Gallagher should be included in a PLD trade. A 30 goal sweetener with name recognition could help the Jets PR wise.

Dvorak
Gallagher
D prospect
2nd rounder

This is a good move for Calgary.

If they can't resign Huberdeau or Weegar they can trade both for a boatload at deadline. They'll get at least another two firsts on top of Florida's in 2024 along with a heck of a lot of prospects and players. Tkachuk wasn't getting them maximized returns because of his BS. Huberdeau and Weegar should be easier to move and the collective haul much greater than Tkachuk alone.

Max return for Cgy happens before start of the season IMO, because trade deadline w will not net a huge haul… law of diminishing returns

Hossa who just turned 29 one month before 2008 deadline netted two meh players (Armstrong + Christensen) + 1st round flop (Esposito) + late 1st in 2008 draft… that was probably the best return for a player at deadline in the cap era.

Hossa also had a much better playoff track record and was borderline elite defensive forward, neither of which applies to Huberdeau.

Disagree. Trade deadline means less cap needed. They'll get more bidders.
