Yup. Calgary's core is getting older and a looooot of them are free agents in a year or two. Huberdeau & Monahan are UFAs next summer, Backlund Lindholm Toffoli and Hanifin UFAs in two summers.

If Calgary goes all out, there could be some real lean years around the corner.

If Calgary's able to re-sign Huberdeau, that's an absolute grand slam for them.

I'm assuming Florida traded him because they didn't think he'd re-sign there?

Huberdeau will never re-sign with the Flames. He's probably also asking his agent why he shouldn't fire him for not securing him a no trade clause in his last contract.

Yep, you end up paying a guy for what he used to do against you rather than for anything he's likely to do for you in the future. It's the "Mark Messier as a Canuck" Rule.

Depends. Players who might be going to the HHOF when careers are over are usually exceptions to that. Players who are so good that even when they regress, their contract is mostly justifiable.

I'm curious to see if Huberdeau has another season like he just had, or if like everyone in Florida, it was a career year, a one-time thing.

You obviously don't remember the Mark Messier era in Vancouver. That was a train wreck on so many levels, both on and off the ice.

Like I said, he was born there but not much else. He's essentially a BC boy so a trade to the Canucks would make more sense. That's where his family and friends are, not in Alberta. Gally and Dvorak for Horvath?
