Carolina Hurricanes 2024 Summer Talk ... press the reset button?

Dellow has an interesting back story. He's an analytics guy and spent some time in the Oilers front office, which was otherwise entirely populated by "just watch the games" chuds, before working outside the sport as an NHL writer for The Athletic and getting in a lot of "debates" on Twitter. Then the Devs hired him and by all accounts he's been an important part of the ground up revitalization and modernization of their front office after Lamoriello left a pile of burning rubble. I'm going to guess his interview with Tulsky was interesting to say the least.

It sounds like they're also going to lean in on his background as a lawyer, the release specifies his background in negotiations. So maybe a cross between Tulsky’s and Krepelka’s skill sets?

Understanding that a max cap team needs revenue, they definitely did a whole lot of things to STMs this coming season to increase the money coming in.

* The price hikes for tickets and parking
* No vouchers
* Exchanges allowed still but the 2 exhibition games are valued lower than any regular season game (a fair approach but that is more money out of my pocket)
* No more "Pure Hockey pricing" (that didn't impact me but it sure impacted some other STMs)

To me I still feel I'm getting solid value for my full season tickets. Certainly my 'per game price' given where I sit is still amongst the best deals in the NHL. But those costs have really gone up over the last 5 seasons. And if you are used to adding additional tickets beyond your season tickets for family or friends, those costs, with no vouchers and a substantially reduced STM discount have really really gone up over the last 5 seasons.

All the cost of supporting a winning team with increasing costs, but my wallet is feeling the sting for sure.

My Pure Hockey pricing disappeared before last season, when they moved it all to the shoot once end. But like you, I’m not complaining. And frankly some of the STM “benefits” really weren’t. Vouchers? Free marketing for the team and frankly a hassle to trade in with a limited number of games last year. One thing I do have to deal with is that we’re going to miss 3 games at Thanksgiving, so I either have to trade them in or see if I can sell them. The games are against the Stars, Rangers and Panthers, I should be able to move the latter 2 games for a nice premium.

Demand for tickets finally caught up with competitiveness and Dundon finally stopped playing the added value game with his customers. That's actually good news, in terms of the health of the franchise. Plus, now you can actually sell your tickets for face value or greater when you can't make a game. And that's been FAR less than a certainty since the 00s.

When I sold a couple of games last year, the Ticketbastard algorithm suggested a selling price well above my face value. I was pleasantly surprised.

I will give credit where credit is due, the Canes still somehow find ways to offer some discounts to the local youth hockey sector for select games during the year. During our coaches call last night the Canes had two Reps on the call to let the PHHL hockey crowd know about the opportunities available for the upcoming season. That is not easy to pull off now with the high demand for tickets and the robust STH base.

That's just brutal for him.... in a meaningless season finale game where we're resting bunch of players, he gets injury that ends two seasons for him - last season and this one before it even starts. Tough, tough break.
I don’t even recall the play or the severity of it at the time…was it a hit or a fall into the boards? I remember Nadeau and Blake both made their career debuts that night.

Very much a bummer for Fast.

Canes were probably hedging for this possibility with all of bottom 6 UFA pickups.

Canes have a couple ways they can play this. I suspect we will maximize LTIR at the season opening to allow us the option of almost $2 4 million in additional cap room while not actually utilizing any of it start. I would think if possible the Canes would rather be trying to bank cap space than utilizing LTIR. But LTIR buys us an opportunity to carry 14 forwards, one being a spot for a kid if they earn it OR 7 Dmen.

It's my understanding that the team never really thought it was likely that Fast would play this coming season, although they were all hoping to avoid surgery. That's a big reason why they went for so many depth forwards in free agency.

Was it the ACDF surgery that Fast ended up having? Letang and Eichel both had it done, Letang with a fusion and Eichel with an artificial disc replacement, so there is some hope he can play again in the future with the medical advancements out there with time and rehab.

No clue ... and with the current state of press coverage for the Canes, there's no guarantee anybody ever even asks. I'm STILL waiting for someone to ask what the deal was with Jake Gardiner that last season when they parked him on LTIR and then gave exactly zero updates on the guy all season long. Not one press conference question on the subject for a whole season. Way to go, guys.

I'm already thinking healing thoughts for Jesper Fast. He was a solid cog in the gears that helped the Hurricanes mesh. I hope he comes through it and doesn't end up with many limitations.

I was out of commission for about 5 months after cervical fusion surgery before I got the green light to play again. My range of motion is limited compared to what it was. Hopefully, Jesper recovers well and can carry on as expected.

Jim
