Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

i think the Markstrom experience may have learned Brad.

he made a big investment in markstrom.

and then he had only 1 good year in calgary to get them to the playoffs, and then he pretty much sucked in those playoffs.

Yeah, the lesson should have been "don't throw a bag at a guy who has been actually good once in his career and he just turned 30".

I think it's "okay" to take the risk of a guy maintaining something resembling his smaller sample performance one tier up. So a backup used to playing ~20 games might give you 30 similar games. A 1B used to playing 30-35 might be a 1A in disguise, a 1A might be a true starter.

But "Woll is going to play 50 games next year and Brossoit can play 30-35" would be loony on both ends of the equation. We might miss the fucking playoffs.
We would make the playoffs with Kallgren playing 82 games.

I've got zero concerns about making the playoffs. Once we're in, someone like fucking Skinner could have us two wins away from the finals as long as the rest of the team performs as it should. He's currently rocking an .887.

The 22/23 version of this team was better than the 23/24 version and it played at a 91 point pace with Kallgren in net.

So nah.

Need a goalie the win the whole thing. The Oilers haven't done dick yet except beat the Kings and Canucks. We don't have the luxury or going through 2nd and 3rd tier playoff teams on our way to the ECF.

Just be a top 2 or 3 team in the NHL for once. Across all metrics. Oilers are gonna juggernaut their way to a cup with a goalie that they didn't heavily invest in. They have a stud core so lean into your strengths and be a stud team.

None of those names inspire any confidence. Get a good goalie. Someone that’s done it before and is capable of being a legit #1.

How many more years before they learn that having the second best goalie in a series is a problem?

You know, with your 100% accurate takes, its surprising you never pursued a career in sports management

Teams win with mediocre goalies all the time. They do not win with shit to mediocre goal scoring. It can be both and definitely is, but one is way more important than the other and should be prioritized.

I think they had an identity in the early Dubas years and they responded to failure by leaning away from it rather than just keep adding better pieces.

Didn’t Shanahan say in his introductory press conference way back that the hard part isn’t coming up with a plan, it’s sticking with your plan?

Prophetic words. Really didn’t take too long for them to switch gears from fast, young & skilled forwards & D, to increasingly filling the forward ranks around the core with the “safe” low-event players Dubas came to adore, as well as veteran plugs and truculent leaderbeans who couldn’t play hockey. And to move away from puck-moving D to focus on “big and heavy”.

Meh. Columbus was a fucky 5 game covid series in August after months off. People make way too much a meal of that. The Montreal series is embarrassing though, no doubt and we lost to a vastly inferior team. But it was an inferior team playing the best hockey they were capable of with a former elite goalie who decided to ignore that he was old and busted for 6 weeks. After going 7 with us, Montreal swept the contender Jets and then beat a team that wins the cup 24 months later.

The Montreal series definitely showed that their was something missing with this group, but the problem wasn't toughness or any such bullshit. It was some veteran skill that didn't panic when shit started to go bad to teach the kids how to roll with the punches that come naturally in a playoff series.
