Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

Here's Hoss' recent insight to this deadline.

I think the obvious play is to trade JT.
Marner I can see signing a short term 2-3 year deal. For 11.6 (just more than Willy) to curry favor with the fans and to cash in later on with hopefully some success under Berube and with tavares millions spent on defenseman and whatever.

But can the leafs trade JT to Utah for a player and a pick...and then at the deadline give the pick you gained back to Utah for JT as the fourth line c. While in Utah JT and UTHC come to an agreement with an extension and the get tavares out of Trudeau's tax nightmare.

Didn't that happen to guerin....traded back to his previous team for a cup run.

Use tavares money to sign Tanev with some term, montour, and or Roy, then you may be able to get Zadorov as well and then get a bonafide 2C or 3C

Im ready to move on from bertuzzi....but wouldn't mind Domi back 3 line or lower

Since we're in the "all rumors are true era" CJ essentially confirmed what mirtle said:

“The fact that the leafs need two defenseman I’m sure in a perfect world for them it’s Tanev and Roy but the world might not be perfect”

Rielly-Roy
McCabe-Tanev (shutty pair)

Part of me feels like it would be a missed opportunity to not get two longer term solutions on d in a year where they absolutely can do that at likely a reasonable cost. But at least tanev should come cheap I guess, albeit long-term. It's year by year with him though. Can't really count on him beyond next year or even next month. He's always gonna be a month away from falling off a cliff and that worries me. But we can't deny how good he was for Dallas. A super elite "stopper" and probably the best stopper in the market.

They may even have space for Debrusk if they go this route tbh. LOF would jizz
I'd be disappointed in that outcome.

I like Roy, but more as the second best D we land. I want Montour or Skjei, and not Tanev. We should do better.

The D situation takes priority over the Debrusk opportunity.

If they liked Tanev that much, they really could have beat Dallas' package for him at the deadline (a 2nd and a B/C prospect), instead of giving up 100 picks for Eddy and Boosh.

Not necessarily, if this “Calgary won’t deal with Treliving” stuff is true.

5years 4 mil per year, front loaded and bonus heavy. Then spend the cash to bring in a skjei for the 2nd pair with McCabe or Lilly. Benoit with the other of McCabe or Lilly on the 3rd pair. Give timmins a chance elsewhere for a mid round pick and see if Suter can be had cheap.

Matt Roy would be a nice Brodie replacement but not sounding like they're going for any of the big fish on the market. Understandable if Marner's caphit isn't going anywhere but, also unfortunate.

Guy is gonna be 35 in a few months. Why would we ever give him a 5 year deal? I don’t think I even want him at all. Brodie just fell off a cliff and died at 34 without notice, so now we’re gonna replace him with a guy older than him?

Wonder if Brad will look at Kylington? His last full season was pretty good and could be cheap based on knky playing 33 games over the last 2 seasons.

you give him term to keep the AAV down and assume he'll spend the final few years on Robidas Island, which is reasonable given his injury history.

but also, he could fall apart at any moment.

Bringing AAV down from what, $10m? Why should a 35 year old who doesn’t provide any offense be able to command $5m with term? I don’t pay through the nose for an old defensive specialist.
