Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

He will get 40 this year following McDavid around and get a nice retirement bump

i honestly don't think any team had forwards with more inflated no-defense offensive numbers than buffalo the previous 2yrs.

that sure came crashing down on them this year tho.

M.e's fever dream lineup, assuming this is what we've got with no roster moves coming

Robertson-Matthews-Marner
Knies-Domi-Nylander
McMann-Tavares-Jarnkrok
Cowan/Grebenkin-Kampf-Holmberg

Rielly-Lilly
McCabe-Tanev
Benoit-OEL

Stolarz
Woll

AHL lineup is going to be fun fwiw

Steeves-Quillian-Grebenkin
Voit-Minten-Tverberg
Hirvonen-Pare-Abruzz

Kokkonen-Villeneuve
Rifai-Niemela

Hildeby
Akhtyamov
Murray

- Why do you hate Matthews?
- Holmberg-Kampf both at C seems like a good way to have 2 4th lines again this year....granted, one with Nylander on it.
- Why Rielly with Tanev? Are we doing heavies by committee? Are we really leveraging Tanev if he's getting most of his zone starts in the offensive end? Are we getting the most out of Rielly if he's handling any heavies at all?
- The best way to trade Lilly away for nothing of note is to jam him on the 3rd pairing all year and give him no real role. Impossible to know what he is or grow him into anything more. May as well just punt now if that's the case imo.

Something I wondered about. Is Matthews actually had dmen that could move the puck and be more involved offensively - could he be more like Sundin and get his goals/points almost no matter the linemates to spread our depth. Plus babysit some of our kids on the wings that we have (or will have).

Plus whoever he plays with - could get some crazy trade value out of them. Still some dumb GMs that won’t think about how Matthews is driving the numbers for the wingers.

Also, doesn’t our new coach just run the dmen without heavy matchups as much as other coaches?

Last 2yrs: g/60 p1/60 p/60

Matthews 1.61 2.49 2.81
Marner 0.84 2.15 2.71
Nylander 1.15 1.91 2.46
Robertson 1.15 1.64 2.23
Domi 0.43 1.58 2.15

Tavares 0.86 1.50 1.99
Knies 0.87 1.56 1.97

(Bunting 0.70 1.60 1.94)
McMann 1.05 1.31 1.93
Jarnkrok 0.97 1.47 1.89
Holmberg 0.72 1.51 1.83

(Bertuzzi 0.64 1.35 1.83)
(O'Reilly 0.72 1.15 1.80)

(Kerfoot 0.42 1.17 1.59)
(Lafferty 0.71 1.10 1.53)
(Engvall 0.69 1.16 1.38)

Kampf 0.46 0.79 1.25
Dewar 0.51 0.89 1.18
Reaves 0.51 0.90 1.18

(Gregor 0.63 1.08 1.13)
(ZAR 0.77 0.92 1.08)
(Acciari 0.56 0.72 0.95)

- Matthews scores and dominates the ice no matter his linemates. And both Knies and Robertson are very productive.

- Holmberg is solid offensively. He's no Kampf. Jarnkrok is also better suited for a defensive checking line. And we all know Krok doesn't score come playoffs so we want him on the 4th line anyways.

- not sure we need to be using a shutdown heavies pair setup all year. And Mo has literally never had the chance to play with someone as good as Tanev is in his role, and we know Mo had looked very good with very cheap Tanev knockoffs.

- Lilly's gotta earn it after his playoffs fiasco. I ain't handing him anything.

The interesting thing about looking at this teams lineup is that it is full of legit players. There is no spot where you have to pencil in a guy that you aren’t sure about. And I think that’s the first time we’ve seen that. The kids really have to push out established NHLers to earn a spot. And they are under the cap with 13/7/2 and no LTIR.

Knies, Robertson, Mcmann, Holmberg, Woll proving themselves as NHLers last year was big.
