I think if he was getting moved it would have happened this month.

they'll extend him, yeah.

and honestly it's the right move in the current circumstances. they won't get what should be required in a deal for a player of this level when he only has 1 year left.

the time to trade Marner was a year ago, before the clause kicked in. Then maybe you get the younger building block player in exchange you need. now it's too late for that.

I honestly don't know why the regular path to NHL regular status isn't by starting on the 4th line. Even if you're a mostly offensive player, learn the defensive side of the game, chip in some offense as you can, and work your way up the lineup as you prove yourself capable.

They have to extend him. They'd be stupid not to. There's no trade getting done before the season, even if he'd waive, which he won't. So focus your attention on getting him under contract on reasonable terms, using the threat of not being a Leaf as your leverage. The good/bad thing in this situation is, there's less danger in walking to July 1 as there usually otherwise is because there's no doubt the player wants to stay in TO, and so we'll always be first choice.

Think I agree with all of this. Happy to give Cowan his 9 games and go from there

Because the organization remains terrified of hurting poor wittle Mitchie’s feelings, they have not and will not ever even bother investigating the trade market for him, let alone actually approach him to waive his NMC.

And then as soon as he’s in the middle of a big hot streak in the upcoming regular season, they’ll cave and in utter desperation hand over a $100M+ contract that’ll make him one of the top-3 most highly paid players in the league. This contact will also come with a full ironclad NMC for the length of the deal and a signing bonus structure that makes it buyout-proof.

And with that, the last remaining flickers of my Leaf fandom will be extinguished.

I’m still baffled as to how scoring 11 goals & 15 points in 23 games down the stretch from Columbus wasn’t sufficient for someone to offer him an NHL contract.

But particularly if Nicky Bobby keeps holding out for a trade, there could be a real opportunity for him here at left wing. And it’d be pretty cool if he finally broke out as an NHLer playing alongside his brother.

I have no optimism thus far. We are gonna go into this season with the same 4 playoff deficient underachievers as last season. You know, getting to watch the Oilers in the playoffs really, really highlighted the drive needed to do well in the playoffs...and Toronto is …again....sadly going to lack with these overpaid dilettante's. I really couldn't care if Matty scored a bazillion goals in the regular season if he can't perform in the off season. What a waste of money.

Watching the oilers who barely had more playoff success than the leafs finally break through and make it to the cup didn’t make you think that maybe the leafs guys can also figure it out?
 
The idea Marner was going to be 100% (Not sure why) traded really will make people have absolutely no interest in the Leafs this season.
