Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

Just a quick comparison:

21-23

Minnesota: 134-63-23/ 109 points per 82
Toronto: 139-56-25/ 113 points per 82

Did we really only have a roster ~4 points better per 82 than:

Kaprizov-Eriksson Ek-Fiala
Zuccarello-Gaudreau-Hartman
Foligno-Rask-Greenway

Brodin-Dumba
Goligoski-Spurgeon

Talbot/Kahkonen/Fleury
This seems crazy to me.

Really tho?

Have we ever actually over achieved in any facet of the game since he was hired? I see a lot of coaches out there who squeeze pretty good results out of pretty mediocre rosters. I mean, just Evason for example. Does that really look like a 105-110 point roster he had to work with?

Pts% from day sheldon was hired

1. BOS .702
2. COL .685
3. CAR .679
4. TOR .665
5. FLA .649

(rest of the stats include the shitty babcock stats from the start of 2019, so the sheldon stats would look even better than these)

5v5 xGF%

1. CAR 56.0
2. TOR 53.9
3. FLA 53.6
4. BOS 53.6
5. COL 53.6

Those were the top 5 teams by both record and xgf% over Sheldon's tenure.

Here's some other stats for those 5:

5v4 PP gf/60

3. TOR 8.79
5. CAR 8.45
7. FLA 8.15
8. COL 8.09
11. BOS 7.75

4v5 PK ga/60

1. CAR 4.69
2. BOS 5.39
10. COL 6.67
12. TOR 6.75
14. FLA 6.98

SV% all situations

1. BOS .916
6. COL .907
8. CAR .906
11. FLA .903
18. TOR .901

It can get much worse.

Evason seems like exactly the right level of lunatic for this roster.

Honestly don't know enough about him or his personality to know if he would work here. I'm just tired of seeing our roster underperform it's talent level.

Here's out conference finish by year since the start of the Matthews era

24: 5th
23: 4th
22: 3rd
21: 1st* Covid season...no idea what a conference was then, we "won" the Canadian division, but would have finished 3rd in any other division by record
20: 7th
19: 5th
18: 4th
17: 8th

This team has never had a signature season somehow. Never a single season where we remotely threatened for most points in the conference or a President's trophy despite rosters that seem on the surface like they should have been capable of it.

Then its Trump for coach!!

The main reason nothing changed is because with the Leafs the money just keeps rolling in no matter what they do.
Precisely. That quote they used to have in the dressing room at MLG that says "Defeat does not rest lightly on their shoulders" is the Big Lie that MLSE has sold to fans for decades. They don't give a shit so long as they can jack up ticket prices every year, and they can because the fanbase will literally accept whatever it's told to accept. It's an abusive relationship. Either that, or they simply don't know the difference between "liking" to win and "wanting" to win, or "doing whatever it takes" to win. They do only what is necessary to keep the money rolling in, and as long as winning Cups is not a condition of fan loyalty, they can sit back and relax.

Yeah it was time for him to go, but it can get much worse than this.

Also, the decisions to sabotage our playoffs roster every year was never just a coaching decision.

It can get much worse.
He also had a boatload of superstar players who sort of helped him achieve all that.

Would a better coach not have had the same results from this level of talent? Would we really have stalled in the first round every year but one? How painfully obvious was it that he should lean on skill and not rely on brutes and plugs? How many post-goal or post-commercial breaks did he trot out his precious 4th line? He sat Robertson in game 7 for Gregor.

He did a lot of damage. I'll take my chances with the next guy.
