GDT #50: Cunt, Sexy and Cock vs BJs

How can you start talking firing when Campbell was literally the best Leafs goalie ever through the first 50-60 games of his career? You can't just bank on guys falling off cliffs midseason suddenly.

The Mrazek signing wasn't great because of the money. But as a backup to a lights-out Campbell, he was fine. Can't look at things now and say, oh, but Campbell is actually shit so that was dumb because we needed a 1A. And Campbell isn't shit. It's a bad slump probably fueled by confidence issues. But if we have to rely on the backup because he can't get it together, then Mrazek isn't that guy. And you can't hold Dubey accountable really because I don't know any team that wins a Cup with their backup goalie unless it's a young heir apparent who was just waiting for their opportunity.

Campbell is 30 years old and has never been a starter until this season. If he goes on to become the greatest leaf goalie ever then Dubas gets the credit, and if he can't handle the job while being our only option, then Dubas gets the blame.

We're 4 years in to our winning window with Dubas at the helm, we've never made it out of the first round, and everything is riding on a 30 year old first time starter with confidence issues and whoa oh oh its Mrazek.

If he hasn't fixed it he should be toast.

Why, just because he needs to be punished? Who comes in next, Rutherford and his trades to send us back into the stone age?

I believe in accountability, but fair is fair. Until like two weeks ago, Campbell had given every indication that he's the best goalie we've ever had start for us. If he flames out, what can you do - you need to have a head chopped off and set on a spike at the gate of the ACC? The assembly of a cup winner is a fluid thing and shit happens to the best GMs out there. If this doesn't correct itself quickly, he should try to swap out Mrazek with someone. But no one guarantees us a bye to the finals. Can't just judge everything with 20/20 hindsight.

To this point, Dubas' Leafs have had enormously bad luck and a frightening lack of killer instinct in the last games of a series. Going into each series, they were primed to come out on top. That's what I judge Dubey on. His rosters have been awesome and improving each year. If the players can't do it, maybe you look to ditching some of them.

So does every team. How many teams have a Vasy they know will be great, or have two guys who are reliably good to deliver multiple rounds?

Shoulda been Fred
Forum group suicide if Fred advances this year and we don't. We sort of feared it, then assumed it wouldn't happen, but now that it is rearing its ugly red head, it's a little scary to think of the shit the haters will be able to say then.

Or replacing Fred a few years before like he should have....
Back to the well of despair for this classic argument, but Fred wasn't the only reason we lost those series, so there was no reason to dump him as a scapegoat. It's the same story now. What the fuck is columbus doing taking us down in a game like this? How do we not pump 10 goals past their goalie? Same question we ask each time Columbus and Montreal beat us in the playoffs.

I mean, the guy was coming off of two seasons of ~.900 play and signed for 4.5 x 2. You're not scapegoating a .895 goalie, any scorn is deserved at that point.

And to be entirely clear on my personal timeline...I wanted to trade him back when he was worth something because the signs of decline in his game here were obvious.

Also, I could give a fuck that a bunch of kids who could barely shave at the time hadn't had their balls drop in the playoffs yet. Fred was almost 30 when he was choking us out of elimination games, not almost 20.

Fred's time ran its course. You couldn't give him a new contract to see what he does on the next game 7. No justification for that.

Dubey played Campbell just right. Acquired him for peanuts, ran him out there when he got the opportunity thanks to injury, and he proved himself as a guy to be trusted. Had a good playoffs. And when he was on fire, he didn't even extend him.

The Mrazek move was a mistake, but who else moved that we should've taken instead. Fleury is the only one I wanted but $7M? So Dubie got the best that was available I guess, it just sucks that it was him.
