It matters but only to a point. What's ailing the Habs right now isn't a coaching issue it's a talent issue. The players as a group simply ain't good enough. No amount of coaching is going to turn a plough horse into a thoroughbred.

Im quite sure that MSL is not coaching his players to give up the blue line every time the opposing team comes towards them. He isnt coaching them to take dumb penalties. And he isn't telling his goalies to suck. His players simply aren't picking up what he's laying down and/or they simply aren't good enough to hold their own for 60 minutes on a consistent basis because they lack the requisite talent do do so.

If and when this team is ever good enough talent-wise for coaching to matter, then we'll be able to render judgment on Marty. But right now? Scotty Bowman in his prime couldn't get much more out of this bunch.
 
When Ken Dryden "went to law school" after winning the Cup in 73 and Scotty was left with the unholy triumverate of Bunny Larocque, Wayne Thomas, and Michel Plasse between the pipes the Habs' got bounced in the quarterfinals by a thoroughly mediocre Rangers team.

Bowman never gave up 9 goals and wouldn't have allowed six in the third. He'd call a time out, button it down and not allow an embarrassment.

When things go sideways Marty is like a deer in headlights. I like the guy sure but the players are not picking up what he's putting down. You can blame the players all you like but it's a two-way street.

A good coach recognizes the situational aspects of each game and that each game is different and makes in-game adjustments. Marty simply doesn't do that.

There is no way Montembeault should have lasted after the fourth goal. Especially when the second goal where rust walked around Matheson was terrible. Monty should have had that. Then not having his pad down on the fourth.

The point isn't that Primeau sucks, it's that Monty was too. Not a good night for him. Needed pulled after 4.

Also, Matheson on his off side was really really bad. Atrocious. That needed correcting after their second goal but he kept Matheson there.

These decisions did not put his players in a position to succeed. People that simply blame the players really have no fucking clue about the game and the structure. Idiot analysts = most fans. We have some here.

Keeping Matheson on his off side was a coaching decision. Not pulling Montembeault? Coaching. Coaching matters.

The front office has not been great imo. They have also had bad luck.

I like the risks they attempted but they haven't panned out (newhook, Dach).

Haven't got a RD. My concern with that is just Guhle (do not really care about Matheson).

Michkov was a gigantic mistake that will haunt us. An elite player fell into our laps and we said nah not worth the risk.

Worrying about waivers with primeau.

Some would say the coach as well but my only issue there is Slaf.

Not having a reliable backup is a big issue for the coach, that's not on him. But his inability to call timeouts when shit goes south is on him.

Monty did get pulled and that went over well.

Matheson is the guy I want playing out of position. Not hutson, not Guhle. We have 2 RD and one is hurt.
