Habs acquire Alex Newhook

The Canadiens’ focus has clearly shifted

Montreal traded a good amount of draft capital to make this deal happen, which also demonstrates a clear shift in how they view where they are in the team-building process. The cupboard of prospects like the ones they could have acquired with the 31st or 37th picks is relatively full, so using those picks to bring in Newhook is a good reflection that the Canadiens believe their window to compete will be opening relatively soon. Perhaps not as soon as next season, but sooner than a typical timeline for a team holding the No. 5 pick in the draft would be. — Basu
Thats fine but Newhook isnt the player to help competing sooner

I don't think either one is correct. Neither team robbed the other, it lands in the middle.

The whole, "he's 22! He's still young!" shit only goes so far with me. It's like when we had Nathan Beaulieu. For a long time, it was the same thing with him. He's young, he's this, he's learning, he's that, he's etc. At what point does the word potential become synonymous with "excuse making"?

One of the issues I have with this trade is, Colorado was going to have a hard time re-signing him. They were in a position where they had to get rid of some players because MacKinnon's new $12.6M contract (that Avs fans insisted was a bargain, el oh el) kicks in. Still not sure why we had to give up both picks to acquire him.

We shall see, though.
Bingo , give them 37 and pound salt

31 and 37 should of lander more in return

No following you. The top two centers as of now are Suzuki and Dach but yes, evenytally I could see Dach being the no. 1 center.
I said if newhook pans out. IE : a second line centre

That would make Suzuki and newhook the top 2 centres.

If Dach takes a big leap and becomes a true number 1 centre that would be amazing but I see him and newhook as wing/centres at this point.

Newhook was centre 61 percent of the time last season. Dach 47 percent

Newhook is here to play as a wing.

31 and 37 are usually where 3rd liners (++ if you're lucky) are available..Habs already have a bunch of prospects of that ilk -- Beck, Roy, Farrel etc

Newhook is more of a "sure thing"

The more I think about it, the more I'm apt to fade the negative crowd here. Newhook has all the elements to succeed; he's a smart, defensively aware and plays the game at a fast pace.

His stock went down last year and the AVs no longer have the patience, nor the cap space to wait for a bounce back.

I believe his stock will go up next year, similar to how Dach busted out last season.

Habs needed to go with a higher ceiling kid for those picks

Newhook a sure thing third liner and probably no better than Beck

That would be great. I don't love it, but I don't think it's impossible that it could work out great.

We definitely bought low but still paid a fairly high price given the risk. If he bounce back it won't be so bad but I'm not still unsure of his upside. He's about a 30 points C/W right now, are we hoping for a 50 points C/W or more?
