Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Would you take him first overall if we win the lottery
Savoie?

Nope. Not sure I'd take him in the top-5 either.

He is, from all indications, a power play producer while not being as efficient 5 on 5.

The older I get, the less interest I have in spending assets for specialists.

While I tend to agree, it's the same reasoning that made us pick KK over BK.
To an extent, but we fucked up with Kotkaniemi. Never should have been in the NHL at 18. We didn't develop him at all and now he's always going to be one of those what if players we'll talk about for the next 30 years.

I bring up Suzuki all the time because he had an extra two years in Junior to work on his game. He's improved a lot of things since he was 18 & drafted.

No arguments frome there, we're on the same page.

At the 10 or so minute mark, Simon Boisvert talks about Matthew Savoie & draft as a whole.

Cliffnotes:

-Thinks this year's draft is mediocre-to-weak. By that, he means that when we fast-forward a decade from now and you re-draft, the top players from this draft will probably be inferior to the average draft as a whole. Doesn't mean that there aren't any good players available this year, though.

-Savoie is a guy that's excellent in the offensive zone with good vision, superb passer, great at controlling the puck (especially on the PP), he's a center that gets used much more on the right wing and wouldn't be surprised if he's a full-time winger in the NHL. Good skater and agile, but for a player his size, doesn't find him to be explosive enough. Thinks he needs power skating. Isn't scared of playing in the dirty areas.

-Negatives: Has the same negative point as he did with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins: He's a player that looks a lot better on the PP than he does 5 on 5.

-Also notes, that for him this draft has a top tier of Geekie, Wright and Cooley, and that everyone else is a step below them.

It does seems like a very weak draft, which is no surprise given our luck. No one really stands out. I think i like Geekie the most put of the 3, he seems to have the most potential.

Not him ....... Wright

I dunno, I'm not sure the Rangers are too enamored with Lafrenière. On the other hand, I'm not sure that's the best package we could get for the pick.

AL won’t live up to the hype in Montreal , he will get crucified

Stay the course with the rebuild unless some team blows your socks like the Lindros trade

You just described Caufield.

There will never be a another Lindros trade but I'd entertain offers.

There is always a ton of chats leading up to the draft

In the Galchenyuk draft one western reporter said Edmonton had a hell of an offer that would of changed their team

2 top 6 plug in play forwards , a top 3 D , a future first and still get a top 10 draft pick

I am not sure teams are willing to trade that first pick

Covid restrictions will definitely ensure the tank will extend firmly into next year….which is awesome in case Geoff gets cold feet

A little tidbit from The Athletic

“I’ve already had conversations with some clients who are telling me the exact same thing; if I become a free agent this summer and it’s Montreal or one of those teams, we don’t even talk to them,” the agent told us. “Those with a wife and children, it’s difficult for them to go to school, they can’t leave the house, there are no fans in the stands … For the Canadiens, the practice rink was closed. Everyone sees what is going on and asks themselves if we get another variant next season, will it be the same thing all over again? I don’t think players want to go through that again.”
