Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Habs can utilize the cap to pull off another Monahan trade but when you stink using his full 10.5 mil may not make sense

Ça sent la coupe, mon ami. 10.5 M is a lot of scratch to pick up deadline help for a cup run.

Yup on a video game for the Habs , simply get a few high priced rentals from cap squeezed teams and get draft capital

Flip them again at the deadline for more assets

He was always a boom/bust 2nd tier prospect

He was only top 5 because our pool was mediocre

Not overly surprising. He'd be at the very bottom of the AHL depth chart if he was back in North America.

Players like Norlinder should always be cautionary tales of having coaches/media overhype their players and taking it at face value. Remember how he was the "next Lidstrom"? Meanwhile, he couldn't get ice time on the Swedish WJC team as the oldest player on their defense.

Players like him , Sandin etc....need to be point producers and run powerplays

They are flawed defensively and lack size so one element of their game has to standout

Players like Hughes have elite skill and offensive ability and make up for his deficiencies

The goalposts seem to keep moving re: Mailloux. Last night on the Marinaro podcast he had Stu Cowan and Pat Hickey on and they discussed Mailloux. While they aren't in the Simon Boisvert (bust) camp, they agreed that Mailloux probably wouldn't be a top 4 guy but a 3rd pairing guy who gets lots of powerplay time. So he's super talented and all but, not a top 4 in the NHL?

This disparity of opinion is a tad worrisome. I'm wondering if perhaps the best thing to do with him is trade him before his shortcomings get exposed because right now he'd be high on the list of prospects that other teams would want.

My guy Boisvert was never a fan of Norlinder at all and was completely on the mark from day 1. One thing he mentioned this summer, and I share his opinion on it to an extent, is that he's soured on the small-ish, 5'11 / 6' PMD from Europe. The Erik Brannstrom, Adam Boqvist, Nils Lundqvist types. All players he had a high opinion on, but have rarely lived up to expectations when they've arrived in North America.

For Mailloux, and prospects in general, honestly, I don't recommend listening to the cheerleaders. Of course Rob Ramage, Francis Bouillon, Dale Hunter, etc. are going to say great things about him. What do you think they're supposed to say, he's a work in progress and he really needs to improve [insert this, this, this & this here]? As for journalists? The ones who don't know the first thing about Junior hockey? Utterly worthless opinions and should be shunned. The only one whose opinion I like is Stephane Leroux when it comes to Quebec players.

I recommend listening & reading those who don't have a vested interest in the prospect's success/failure. When you see what people like Simon Boisvert, Scott Wheeler & Corey Pronman have to say, just to name a few, they all have reservations about Mailloux.

They could be wrong. We'll see how he turns out. It's one of the reasons I'm very excited to watch the Laval Rocket play this year.

and for all the love thrown at Lane Hutson (including from me), he's also suspect

and even if you listen to the experts, as you say, don't tale anything to the bank. Scott Wheeler watches these guys play for a living and he wrote about all his mistakes yesterday, including our very own Jan Mysak who he ranked as the 12th best player in the draft

Let's face it, if these guys had a repeatable edge in predicting career futures, they'd be paid millions by an NHL team

Excellent post, Logan and Lane are work in progress and not sure things

Great post but these reporters only see what they are at 17-18 and have no clue on player development

Those next 3 years with proper coaching and structure are critical for correcting mistakes

Unlike plug and play NFL prospects , NHL is a wait and see and luck is also involved

But these are two different things, though.

It's one thing making predictions about what 18 year olds are going to be when they're 23 to 28 years old.

It's another thing to watch a player's progression (or lack thereof) from age 18 to 20 and re-calibrate expectations. A lot of people had Lane Hutson in the second round, maybe late first. Re-do the draft today and he'd go significantly higher than anyone had him.

Yup , but Logan is much better today than a year ago

I’m somewhat sceptical about Mailloux’s chances, but the one mitigating consideration was that it was his his age group that royally 🦭 ed by COVID.

But maybe that doesn’t matter at this point. We’ll see.

One thing I gathered about Mailloux is that he significantly improved his overall game in the second half of the year, so that gives me hope but I’m not even close to be sold on him. That’s why I’m playing the wait game with our prospects, especially on defense, we have so many, let’s wait and see who stick.

Or trade one of them when their value might be higher now
