Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Never had a chance at a competitive team even if you forced it by more patching
They could have tried more patching, they didn’t. It’s been assets accumulations since day 1. Hughes didn’t sign a single UFA or traded for a veteran, besides Matheson, which was a Petry dump, and Monahan, which was assets collection.

Did we ever really tank, though? Honestly.

I could listen to arguments that we pulled the ol' unintentional tanking thing. We just had a terribly built team with no prospects and a shit ton of money tied in bad contracts - every single one of those contracts was seen as bad, btw - and went through a huge string of injuries. That's not tanking, that's just shitty roster building. Thanks, The Charlatan!

A bit of both imo. Sold, didn't add etc but could have done more like over playing Primeau, keeping better prospects in the minors, etc

For all those saying that we somehow should aspire to more than most franchises due to our ancient history (and I get that argument), after this season we will have made the playoffs once since 2014-2015 in a full season. We will have missed after six full seasons. In the last seven seasons, we will have missed six times. Nothing will take away the excitement and joy of 2020 and 2021 playoffs but in full seasons, we are basically a bottom feeder now who earns top dollar with a nice ancient history.

Whaven't won a series in a full season since 2015.

Some of you say 3 more years until we can make the post season.

Basically we aren't becoming Buffalo, we are Buffalo.

Okay, and what do you propose as the solution to “we are Buffalo” other than what HuGo are doing? I’m all ears.

What is your solution

Keep patching the Nero way , or finally try to do it the right way with a proper rebuild

This was long long long overdue

If we were actually saying that we were rebuilding in 2016 and we were still mired in the bottom of the standings today, then sure, we would be Buffalo. But we never so much as attempted a proper rebuild until after Bergevin was fired. In fact, this is the first true attempt at a rebuild for this franchise since Tommy Gorman took over the GM duties from Cecil Hart and Jules Dugal in 1940.

2016 should off been the start of the rebuild

Wrong trade for PK and systemically trade Price , Gally, Petry over the years

Nero did one right unloading Max , nice how things turn out when you unload a player at the right time

Next year will be the last for Savard, Dvorak, Allen, Armia, Evans and likely RHP. That’s one quarter of the roster.

Resources will be needed to get rid of Anderson and/or Gallagher and team building. (Ideally, Allen should go before contract expiry too, but I’m not holding my breath.) Slafkovsky and Guhle will need contracts after 24-25.

Those resources will include at least two surplus young D, Savard, Dvorak, a multitude of high draft picks and 10s of millions in cap space.

There is a huge amount of scope for change and improvement. The point of all this is that it’s clear HuGo have embarked on a very different approach than Copernicus.

if they weren't English, would you be as confident? The more I think on it, the less convinced I am they have any real plan. Is build in draft? If so, why trade 1st for Newhook? If go with young goalies why have we not waived Allen?

I'm not sure we are better off now than Feb 22.

Half this roster is trash and will be turfed in a year or 2

I dont see moves for Gally or Anderson until we get within 1 year of contact expiry since Hugo is not into long term retaining salary mode

They dont stop the regime from doing anything moving forward

I expect Price to get moved after next season with 1 more year to go to a team looking for LTIR cap help.

This roster is still in the evaluation process and determining who the fuck fits into this roster puzzle moving forward

As mentioned Hugo took over not only a gut job but near zilch in the funnel as a starting base ...no elite prospects or quality vets in the 25-27 year range to buy some time as kids develop .

Our pipeline is ok-good but not high end and players like Barron, Struble and Harris may not be anything more than 3rd pair D if they stick

That leaves hope and prayers that 1 or more of Mailloux , Hutson , or Reinbacher are better than Guhle who is nothing more than a decent # 4

Newhook was on a 25 goal pace prior to injury , those picks may not play 25 games

Not enamored with the trade but not as if he is 28 years old

If that would be my response, I wouldn’t have asked you. I really would like to hear what you think we should do.
Use half of our 12 draft picks and 2-3 dmen to trade for players who can play.

Waive Allen immediately.

Buy Gallagher out this year or pay a team to take him (us our draft picks to entice). The latter is preferable but likely not doable.

Josh, trade him if can but doubt we get anything.

Buy out Armia and Dvorak

Jettison Evans

If we want to go young, do it.

Burrows and Letowski should go

Low hanging fruit pehaps but we need to stop being worried about losing an asset for nothing when said assets do nothing fornus.
