Lou Lamoriello named Leaf GM

When Shanny took over, if anyone told me our next coach would be Mike Babcock and our next GM would be Lou Lam...

I hope you're all right. Lou has been one of the worst minds in hockey over the past ten years. Just completely and utterly out of touch. Cliff Fletcher level bad.

Too many bright minds in that room to allow bad moves like the one you brought up to happen again

Those days are behind us

There have been some bad moves, but lets not pretend like he has been a comlete disaster. The Schnieder trade was one of the best of the last few years. He stole the best young goalie in the league from a team that wasn't looking to trade him. He brought in Kovy. He didn't overpay Parise or Clarkson. He was in the cup final just 4 years ago.

Their real problem has been the draft. It hasn't produced anything, forcing them to sign all these old guys. But thats Hunter's domain not Lou.

Oh let's not sugarcoat anything. The man has been absolutely mortifying. Ryan Clowe alone is a firable offence. Not to mention Volchenkov. Yikes.

He brings experience to the table. And good experience at that. More than anyone else could have. The one thing the Leaf front office was missing.

I was really skeptical of Shanahan at first but everything he's done this summer I've really, really liked. So I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt that when he says he's going to find a GM who is on board with the Shanaplan... that he means it and Lou is on board.

2013-14
Pres: Tim Liewieke
GM: Dave Nonis
Assistants: Claude Loiselle, Dave Poulin
Coach: Randy Carlyle

2015-16:
President: Brendan Shanahan
GM: Lou Lamoriello
Assistants: Mark Hunter, Kyle Dubas, Brendan Pridham
Coach: Mike Babcock

Crazy.

If you get the guy who can convince the league to bend rules in his favour, and is just a placeholder until one of your other guys is ready, then it could be a great move.

If he comes in and actually starts to run the show, then I think you'll be in trouble. This 4-headed monster that is your management will have to work together or else things could end up being really weird. I mean, you just brought in the most powerful coach and the most powerful GM to a team that already had 3 or so guys who are practically already GMs. It'll certainly be interesting to watch the dynamics.

This is the way I look at it. I absolutely HATE the idea of Lou coming in here and running things with full autonomy.

BUT...if you're already prepared to believe that the Shanaplan didn't change just because we hired Mike Babcock, then I think you've got to believe the same thing when it comes to Lamoriello. Lou's here to turn what was previously a big weakness for this management group into a strength: experience and connections at the NHL level. The only guy still active in the hockey world today that could rival him there would probably be Glen Sather.

And yes, it should also be fun now that all of the NHL rules will no longer apply to the Leafs with Godfather Lou in charge.

I'm shocked by this.

If he's a mentor, placeholder, figurehead kind of GM that is just another member of the committee, then great.

If he's coming in as a dictator and will be veering off our course, this is potentially very bad.

How long before he trades for a bunch of former Devils?
