New Canadian Politics Thread

Trudeau does not have to negotiate with them but as the PM of all Canadians he or one of his representative should at least be able to listen to a few representative from the less looney fringe protesters with out resorting to name calling.
What do you suggest? The people presenting themselves as spokespeople for the occupation are the ones trying to bring down government. I'm interested to know what people think a discussion would look like, and who would be part of it?

to what end?

At times I get deep into the world of these psychopaths on social media and I can tell you that a lot of them encourage straight up violence to get what they want. This is not exactly a peaceful "movement." It's okay to hate Trudeau and still acknowledge that there is no winning in this situation.

It would also help If the protest wasn’t receiving so much outside support not just financially but also from the general public. Most average people do not support these blockades but there is a very significant number who do and agree with the general idea of removing most restrictions.

Problem is, I think these "less looney" representatives of this protest that you keep saying Trudeau should engage with are figments of your imagination. Considering that one of the core, stated goals of this movement from the outset has been a fascist coup against the Canadian government, and I've yet to hear of anyone acknowledged as a "leader" or "representative" of the convoy disavow that goal.

If you can point to anyone who actually has, I'm all ears. Though it'd be a pretty dubious claim to say you're not an insurrectionist while making common cause with insurrectionists.

Yeah, I mean, I'm sure if he wandered out on the street and met a random person who's part of the convoy, the first thing they say to him might not be about him resigning. But does it actually do anything to have that conversation? I doubt him meeting with a few random people is really going to convince the rest to leave, and I can't imagine him sitting down and having a heart to heart with some of them is going to change his mind. All it would do is give them more resolve that they're "winning".

Because in all of this, I don't think I've heard anyone from the convoy with a sense of "we just want to be listened to." Like, in climate protests and stuff around, that's often a stated goal - you know you're not going to completely change things, but you just want your voice heard. I don't get the sense that this group is in that same mood.

I wonder though if there would be some way to publicly engage with a small group of "average joe, good 'ol Canadian" truckers (there are actually some involved in some way in the protest). Sort of bypassing the looney tunes leadership calling for dissolving government and so on. I'm just not sure who they are or how you'd reach them, but I feel like those closer to this at various levels must know.

Probably time to slightly amend the definition...

But… won’t they just say “we want you to drop all covid mandates?” Like to what end exactly?

Yeah, I don’t know if it’s even possible. But if Trudeau or someone else actually made a show of engaging someone who happened to be reasonable, it would go some way to undermining this stupid shit show coup attempt. He could just basically say what he said in his speech yesterday: “we’re all sick of the pandemic and the restrictions. We can’t wait to be able to remove all public health measures. We’re being guided by the science. But we hear you. Thanks, and now please go home.”

You obviously can’t deliver that message to the guys who want the Governor General to dissolve the government.

fuck. all this hand-wringing about 'omg how are we gonna tow them' is fucking infuriating.

only when white people protest do we sit and do nothing because 'omg removing them may be difficult'. never matters a lick if the protesters are not white.

the double standard on its own would be one thing but just this past week has made crystal clear the absolute fucking chasm that exists between how people of colour are treated and how white people are treated by the police. and it is kinda terrifying... feels like we live in a white nationalist state when the (enforcement, at least) powers that be are clearly sympathetic to that cause above and beyond all others.
This is why I think Trudeau needs to call in the troops to evict these idiots. Right wingers are only too happy to support the use of force to maintain "law and order" when it's BLM or a Native blockade. So what's sauce for the goose should be sauce for the fascists. See how they like being on the receiving end of some police brutality.
