New Canadian Politics Thread

am I the only one who looks at that, shrugs, and says, 'okay, arrest the kids too then'.

maybe you can not charge the kids?

whoda thunk that it'd be good ole Doug Ford to be the first person in government to actually do something about the bozo brigade. not this guy, that's for sure!

and of course the fucking City of Ottawa refuses to even participate in the injunction proceedings so that its residents can fucking sleep.

these fuckers are gonna keep escalating until there is anything resembling consequences. total failure of leadership here.

Yeah, you don’t deter a bully who keeps escalating by continuously turning the other cheek and hoping they’ll eventually leave you alone.

You have to turn around and punch them square in the nose.

Yeah, I think it's technically the province that's the only one that can ask for help. Although I did read something recently saying that if the issue deals with multiple provinces, then potentially the feds could invoke things themselves. This was in response to some of the protesters setting up over in Gatineau and whether that was a bad idea or not.

Does sound like Ford has cut off their donation stream on GiveSendGo, so that's something. But we're well past the "cut off their money and maybe they leave" phase.
In 1970, Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa had to formally ask the feds to send in the army although it was the feds who first had the 22nd Regiment (the Vandoos) deployed to guard federal property in Montreal a few days before. But Bourassa did wind up asking for the army to help with policing (a move that was supported by all parties in the National Assembly, including the PQ) and the following day, Bourassa formally requested that the feds grant the province emergency power (so that the cops would have a free hand to crack skulls and toss people in jail without charge) This is the point at which the feds invoked the War Measures Act.

In this case, the army wouldn't really be assisting the cops because the whole reason they're being called upon is because the cops aren't bothering to do their own damn job. If the cops were doing their job the army wouldn't be needed in the first place. And the army can get deployed without the federal government having to take the more extreme step of enacting emergency powers. The presence of armed troops alone should be enough to dissuade the protesters. Soldiers restore order a lot differently than cops because they aren't trained in law enforcement techniques like de-escalation. When troops are deployed, shit is escalating, not de-escalating, and their job is to get shit done and not worry too much about how much of a mess gets made in the process.

The Auto Parts Manufacturers Association (APMA) filed an application for an injunction on blocking the bridge in Windsor. And it's good, and stuff, but they have an affidavit from a policy officer which is truly baffling. This is the deputy chief of police of Windsor, and the guy swears in his affidavit that he believes the people blocking the bridge are violating a bunch of sections in the Criminal Code. Even lists them.

SO... you're Deputy Chief of Police, you see someone breaking the law, and you instruct your officers to please ask them nicely to stop. What?

Sidebar, the APMA's president, Flavio Volpe, is a good quote. He does not beat around the bush.

that is a good quote.

and the police are useless imbeciles. they are really making the case for defunding as we get more and more news coverage of them in their 'supervisory' roles

Flavio is good. He went on FOX yesterday as well to say this occupation was ignorant and embarrassing. Probably helps a lot with that audience that he sort of looks like a trucker.

Sort of a microcosm of Dougie’s entire handling of the pandemic so far.

Finally arrives at the right thing to do, but hilariously late and after pulling a lengthy disappearing act and hoping the problem will go away on its own.

I imagine there’s probably a screaming voice mail from his psycho daughter in his inbox right now.
