New Canadian Politics Thread

What he *wants* to do is different than what he does. But he's a populist and is pretty good at politics. He is making the popular choice in a year that there is an election. Big win for him today.

Let's wait to see them actually clear the blockade.

Yep. As of right now, it’s just words on paper.

The whole point of the state of emergency may also just end up being to allow the province to officially pass the buck to the feds.

If that does happen, hopefully Trudeau steps up and channels his dad a bit, rather than continuing the jurisdictional squabbling.

His words alone are probably good enough for him to score political points. That often matters more than execution. Doug got a big W today in any event.

This is all just such a bullshit response by every authority involved anyway. "We have to balance their right to express themselves with the rights of others to do anything at all." These idiots are free to stand on the sidewalk and hold up signs and screech at each other into their CB radios or Zello apps.

Blocking a bridge with your vehicle is not the type of right protected by 2(b). Your truck does not have Charter rights.

It also allows law enforcement to get medieval on the asses of the protesters and lock them up without charge, a la G-20. They can also confiscate/commandeer any and all property such as their precious trucks and portable saunas.

Dougie is balancing an angry auto sector with his loony base.

On the Fed level, I suspect there are some CPC MPs in Ontario feeling rather vulnerable right now.
Seems like the "freedom fighters" shouldn't have pulled the Windsor stunt & stuck to Downtown Toronto (where voters there wouldn't likely vote for Ford & he isn't exactly fond of them either) and/or Ottawa.

Normally I'm against removing restrictions, but the passport system did its job, got more shots in arms, but I don't think it's serving much purpose now. Or being enforced for that matter.
Yeah think that’s fair. Sucks they were super weak on protesters breaking laws first before doing exactly what they want. Don’t think it’ll be the last time these fuckers try to hold us hostage.

Yeah, we maximized the amount of folks who got their first doses and that led to far fewer hospitalizations in this wave than there otherwise would have been. Mission accomplished. Time to move on. The vaccines don't help much in the Omicron era re: transmission but I will hop on board the mandate train again if gen 2 products prove to have near sterilizing immunity.

I'm traveling to Hogtown next month so I won't be unhappy about not having to put up with the hassle. I'm as vaxxed as can be so I'm not really worried for myself.

Pretty sure they tried downtown Toronto, but were stymied by a combination of our horrible traffic, a more coordinated & prepared police/political response and an exponentially larger and more hostile local population than what the chucklefucks in Ottawa are dealing with.
