New Canadian Politics Thread

I want to know what the dairy concessions mean with respect to BGH being used in the manufacture of Canadian cheese. But I imagine that is far too complicated a detail to come out at this early stage. But **** me, keep that American shit dairy out of ours.

While ideologically I can't really get behind supply management, if it keeps the BGH crap off our shelves I am all for it.

I would imagine that just because America can export more dairy to us, it would still need to meet Canadian standards.

I also fully expect that American dairy will be fully marked as American and you will be able to buy Canadian dairy as per normal, even if it is a bit more expensive.

Freeland says dairy will be compensated for the additional US access to the market ****this is news**** need to find out exactly what it looks like and if dairy farmers are going to be happy.

one of the major issues here is that US dairy is heavily subsidized. so i'm guessing that the "concessions" made to the US here just mean that Canada will resort to a similar system of subsidizing our dairy farmers as well, to keep the competitive balance.

No, it will be like CETA. Canadian producers are giving up market share, in the CETA case 3.25 percent, and they get compensated for that percentage of the Canadian Dairy market that has effectively been snatched from them and given to another country.

It's a one time payment if I remember correctly.

For TPP it was 4.3 billion over 15 years.

my concern is about Canadian cheese being made with American milk products. I read that one of the restrictions that will be lifted is in regards to a product used in cheesemaking. so not American cheese, but American dairy product used in the manufacture of cheese. which Canadian producers could then smack a "Made in Canada" label on...

The class 7 for non-fat solids only came into effect in 2017, so there will be no change realistically.

Freeland is amazing.

Dumied the Europeans with tears, Asia Pacific with delays and the Americans with not giving a damn about deadlines and knowing that the Americans would need to cave on a deal to have any hope of getting it past congress.

Well done Canada.

yeah she did an amazing job it appears

future PM perhaps?

even Rona Ambrose congratulated her on twitter

She will be the future PM the same way Kim Campbell was a PM.

The few months between the PM stepping down and being crushed in a election.

Trudeau likely rides this to a second term, Canadians get tired of him by year 7 and Freeland steers the good ship liberals against a resurgence CPC lead by Mackay.

That aside, even die hard conservatives on other sites I'm on are saying things like
Classic creating a pool of crap to swim in and coming out smelling like a rose. Trudeau should be buying lottery tickets and calling an early election before his inept luck runs out. From my perspective the US negotiators saved our asses because they really wanted a deal. Not because Trudeau and Freeland did a good job.

Kudos to the hard work and people behind the scenes that made this happen, despite the ineptitude, in the field of negotiation, of our team leaders.
So even they can see this deal is a pretty good one.

Probably the best deal they could get. Now if Trudeau would provide answers to the NDP and Conservative when they asked specific questions we might find out just what we gained. All he would say is Canadians say it is a good deal for Canada.

In the long run it really doesn't matter if Canada gave up more than they gave up. A deal had to be made.

MacKay? If you mean Peter, he will be a nobody in another 5-6 years if he already isn't.

If sheer loses he is done, bernier will be with his own party, who else is left?

Only people with some name recognition not associated with sheer will be ambrose and Mackay. Unless there is a up and comer in the conservative ranks I dont know about.

I wouldn't put it past the CPC to nominate someone completely turrible. Doug Ford or Kellie Leitch for example. I don't expect Brad Wall to stay quiet forever either and he's the model for western conservatism right now.

Leitch got absolutely no traction last time, Ford will either be in his own fiefdom of Ontario or voted out as a joke, and wall besoin de pratiquer son francais

I believe Mackay always intended to avoid the harper fall of 2015, skip the two Trudeau terms and come back to grab the reigns of the party in 2020,2021, just when people are sick of Trudeau and the liberals.

Leitch is just an example of the type of nutter than I wouldn't be shocked at seeing the Conservative rally behind, not necessarily Leitch herself. Ford is a greasy opportunist through and through. He would step down as Premier in a heart beat if he saw a legit shot at winning a leadership challenge for the federal CPC and smelled a weak Liberal party. Guys like that aren't happy in fiefdoms. As for french, Scheer barely speaks french.

He doesn't need to answer questions from other politicians. As long as they properly communicate the impacts/benefits to stakeholders via meetings and the general public through the media it's fine.

No politician has ever answered a question in question period. It's not called "answer period."

I would love to read into Kellie Leitch's pathetic showing in the CPC leadership race as a repudiation of MAGA style right-wing populism in Canada, but I really don't think you can.

If you want to get the allegiance of far-right sexist/racist misanthropes, you either need a white male greasy conman who can successfully pass himself off to that crowd as a business-savvy, anti-PC alpha male (Doug Ford, Donald Trump), or you need an attractive young white female face to parrot their twisted worldview back at them (Faith Goldy, Laura Southern, Tomi Lahren).

A funny-looking middle-aged woman with a butch haircut like Leitch was never going to get the job done.

The legal age for rec cannabis will go up to 21 in Quebec, if CAQ keeps their promise.
