New Canadian Politics Thread

Canada should do all of this because any nation without a robust rail network is going to struggle economically in the future. Has nothing to do with richer or poorer right now. Fwiw, Mexican raw GDP isn't far beyond ours.
I'm totally in agreement but it's not gonna happen. The US and Canada have too many politicians who kowtow to car owners, dealers and manufacturers. Doug Ford's solution to every problem is "moar highways". In 2024 you can't get enough voters to give a shit about anyone but themselves. Their personal modes of transportation come before any public mode, be it mass transit or trains.

The whole fucking thing needs an overhaul, but I don't know if we're capable of it anymore. When was the last time we did a big public infrastructure project that wasn't a complete fucking clown show?
The Trans-Canada Highway, which was completed in (checks notes) 1962.

Depends on the scope of what we're talking about here, but I will say that Canada handled covid pretty well all things considered. Also the Calgary and Vancouver Olympics seemed like huge successes despite being a massive undertaking with crazy issues to deal with.

There was an disturbing amount of high rise construction fatalities in Ontario about 15ish years ago. Prov government had to crack down.

A pretty famous swing stage incident as well with multiple fatalities that brought about a bunch of changes in Ontario. Pretty sure it was around Christmas as well. A few people went to jail over it if memory serves (not for long enough, but still).

Highways outside of GTA gave generally been OK. The new 30 south of Montreal is great. The highway in NB is brilliant. Just trucks with french fries and tourists from ON bombing down there at 140.
The 30 is a godsend.

And yeah the trans canada is maybe the most memorable part of the drive across NB

Holy fuck it took the 30 a long time to get done though. I remember "30 is closer than it appears" like 15 years before it opened.

The 88 and 2010 games were both money pits. They only look good in comparison to the 76 boondoggle but they were both corrupt and provided zero to the taxpayers other than a massive bill to pay.

In both cases, the boosters talked about the "Olympic legacy" that would ensue from all the development. But a few years ago when people were floating the idea of Calgary hosting another winter games we found out that all that "legacy" was no good anymore and would need to be replaced with new shit. The ski jumping towers? Meh, no longer good enough. The Saddledome? Outdated.

In Vancouver they told people that with the games there would finally be a twinning of the Sea to Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler. But when the games arrived no one was allowed to use the Highway past Squamish. Today, nearly 15 years later, that fucking Highway still isn't twinned all the way. They built the speed skating oval on a sandbar in Richmond that began subsiding 5 minutes after the closing ceremonies so it's useless for speedskating now.

The Olympics are nothing but a real estate grift on the taxpayers, just like stadium deals.
