New Canadian Politics Thread

If you remove oil, we run the the trade deficit with the US.

Do they not want our deeply discounted (i.e. “subsidized”) oil?

This issue is such a perfect example the intersection of ignorance, gaslighting and salesman hucksterism. Can’t even get basic concepts and definitions correct. Brain cells are killed just trying rebut this idiocy.

If she was smart she'd wait until PP drives the country into the ground.

I think this is her playing the long game and not wanting to risk someone useful winning the leadership race and freezing her out for the next ~5 years. Whoever wins this leadership race is probably the person running for the Liberals in the 2029-2030 election as well unless a sacrificial muppet wins this leadership race, they perform like dogshit in the election, and the Liberals end up 3rd or even 4th in seats or some shit.

I've got a soft spot for Freeland due to the Ukie thing personally. She's smart, she's tough.

From IPSOS post Trudeau resignation:

Considering that Liberal support in the same poll is at 20%, and than 81% supported Trudeau's resignation....Freeland immediately moving the needle to 23-24% with a 20% "I don't know" band is about as encouraging as the Liberals could expect coming out of this.

Yeah, I don't follow the ins and outs of Canadian politics probably as much as I should, but I don't understand the hate for her. Of course Trudeau hasn't done a great job and been there too long, but the party has also been smeared into the mud by a 24/7/365 right-wing bullshit machine. He did a good job with covid and a lot of people hate him for it. And fuck the convoy. I would like to know why people are so instantly dismissive of her. I understand she will be associated with the current government to her detriment, but that happens in every election.

What are the legitimate pros and cons of Chrystia Freeland?

Pros:

- She's not Trudeau
- The covid response was mostly her heavy lifting
- Managing Trump and the renegotiation of nafta was mostly her heavy lifting
- Was on the team that negotiated CETA
- Pro Ukraine and the Russians don't like her all the way back to her days as a journalist
- Has managed to piss off the Saudi's and the Chinese in the past

Cons:

- The optics of being this close to Trudeau for this long are what they are. Being the competence that propped up his government for this long just "looks" bad at the moment because he's become so disliked
- Similarly, the optics of being the finance minister during the post covid period "looks" bad regardless of what the economic performance actually was
- The whole "her grandfather was actually a nazi collaborator during the war" thing and her involvement in the whole parliament honouring a nazi thing again, looks bad (ukrainian history during WW2 is complicated....)

So yeah, I look at her and I see good performance with overall competence in every portfolio or major project she was involved in....while spending her entire professional life getting the right people to be mad at her. On the other end, most/all of the bad shit is optics driven that is either way more complicated that the people mad about it will admit (or understand), or shit splatter from "Fuck Trudeau" hitting her.
