Where is this 600-700k starter home? That's what I paid in 2019 and it's up 70% since then. Friend just bought a townhouse for 800k+.I think the culture that has grown up around the angst is a force multiplier, but it's not the root cause imo. It's that young men have been left behind by society and shitty sub cultures have been more than happy to embrace them, tell them it's not their fault and redirect the angst.
This generation of young men are paying for the cultural transgressions of previous generations of men, and they're mad about it. They're comparitively uneducated, over medicated, under employed, and less wealthy in a world that has gotten far more expensive.
I think about how fortunate I was to buy a house during basically the last era that home ownership was relatively affordable, and what that's done to the trajectory of my financial life. I absolutely couldn't fucking imagine being 10 years younger and trying to do it in 2023 instead of 2013 like I did. My home doubled in value over the next ~7 years and then when I sold that and bought again, the home we bought next has gone up ~30% since we bought in like 2020. I would be pretty angry too if I came of age at a time where a starter house in a bedroom community 1 hr from Toronto was 600-700K and my options to keep my mortgage under 2500 a month today would basically be a small condo instead of the 3bed, 2 bath corner lot with a pool that I bought by myself in 2013 for 1600 a month with property taxes incl. Securing that was the single biggest reason my financial future is secure, I was able to change careers to something I enjoy more, etc. Missing out on that would have sucked, and I was already one of the lucky ones from an employment standpoint. Honestly don't even want to think about how grim coming through 10 yrs later would have looked like.
So yeah, young men are listening to the only people speaking to their problems. Those people just happen to be the worst among us. You want a civilization to collapse in a hurry? Let an entire generation of young men feel left out of society.
600k might get you a house in East Hamilton near Tim Hortons field
