New Canadian Politics Thread

Anecdata time: My dad, who is typically soft Maga and finds trump hilarious and usually votes conservative, seems to like Carney. He is unquestionably voting for him, along with my mom. They are big fans.

Another fun anecdata talking point: went to a baptism last week, had my grandma come from the states. Minutes after the priest finished his sermon (which was filled with bashing gays, trannies, etc.) he went up to my 90 year old Nonna to blast Trump for a solid 3 minutes. He also said that Carney will eat him alive. My Nonna doesn't give a fuck about politics and had no idea what he was talking about. But a clear sOcIaLlY conservative priest will be voting lib and has his #elbowsup.

I've seen some deeper dives into this issue lately and a lot of that support comes from 1st gen immigrants who have been here 10 yrs or less, so that kind of makes some sense. The rest is the usual "Western Seperatist" suspects, but honestly, after looking into this a bit deeper I'm not particularly concerned about it.

- There is nowhere near a popular mandate for this happening in the way it's required by the SCoC. There will never be a 50+1 referendum threat again. The law (that was addressed after the Quebec referendum) is worded in a way that requires the HoC to agree that the separating jurisdiction(s) have made it extremely clear that this is a popular decision. In this context, even something like the Alberta cities voting heavily against it would make it hard for Alberta seperation to meet the criteria, even if a referendum vote hit ~55% in total.

- The shit that isn't legally theirs in the province is crazy. The national parks aren't theirs, which is a bigger deal for them than it would be for any other province. Wood Buffalo national park is a huge chunk of northern alberta...but more important is that Banff and Jasper national parks constitute something in the range of 75% of Alberta's tourism...and that's all federal territory. Then throw in the oil sands being on treaty land that the bands would want 0 part in renegotiating, and less interest in leaving Canada to be part of a tiny petro state....yeah, it's just not happening the way those people answering survey questions think it's happening and this is before we even address the debt issues on both sides of the ledger. Alberta would owe ~110B on their way out to cover their portion of the Canadian debt....and would immediately owe 350B as their portion of American debt on the way in.

The people answering this question just don't understand what they're saying yes to.

And that essentially turns the GST into a tariff on non-Canadian manufactured vehicles right? So his solution to the trade war with the U.S. is to put a tariff on autos from all other countries.
Yep, it would violate trade agreements because non-Canadian autos would still have to pay GST on import while Canadian products would be exempt.

Who cares about CUSMA commitments anymore, but it would be a problem under the other trade agreements.

do it. and aggressively. there's no reason a comprehensive free trade agreement between the democracies of the world can't get done very quickly.

don't bullshit around. get it done.
Yes! And bring all the Scientists, Professors, and tech bros who are disillusioned with America here.

Let's make Canada the country of the Future!
