New Canadian Politics Thread

I always figured he was only good for a term and half as it was. But I think the knives will come out quickly. There are some ambitious people waiting in the wings and it is a remorseless party.
Depends on the situation.

In a minority parliament for example, nobody wants to be running a leadership campaign

He didn’t mention this stuff to the leadership vetting committee. I think he’s toast.

Well, unless he pulls off some kind of miracle majority and flips the bird.

oh, I think some try to draw out the knives, but I don't think he goes quietly into the night.

I also don't think that when I comes right down to it, that they risk a open civil war a la Chretien Martin variety with the party in a minority situation or slim majority. I think he serves out his next term and if he hasn't rehabilitated his image in 2 1/2 years he's told that a charge is needed at the top.

I would be shocked if he gets turfed after winning a election.

2 years, max (probably less), is my gut. Others will sense and opportunity, and party elders will grow impatient, especially if Tories dump Opie for a real politician.

Again, depends on whether he can rehabilitate his image.

If he manages to do that and his approval rating rises with it, he will stay on.

The party elders may not like him, but they like being in opposition even less.

I can't see Trudeau getting turfed before this coming election. It's too late. For better or worse, the Liberals are stuck with him.

So Trudeau's future comes down to the outcome of this election. If he's only elected with a minority or if he loses the election, I agree with lecoqsportif that the knives will come out and the LPC will be looking to replace him.

But if he manages to pull off another majority somehow, then he's safe for at least another term.

I think he's going down in flames and taking his party with him. The alternative is even more repulsive, so who knows. It will be interesting to see if the major newspapers/media/reporters start to throw their hopes behind Singh (pretty clear a lot of them are alarmed by Scheer and will lurch behind the best chance to stop him). The next few weeks polling will have a lot to say about it.

And, really, they should have no hesitation. Like Layton, Singh is just a liberal with some orange tint and few connections with the powerful.

initial polling(its still early) shows no drop of the liberals.

Prepare to be disappointed

These things take time to register in polls. Give it a week.

I won't be particularly disappointed, in any event. The NDP are currently going all third way bullshit and I will not be voting for it.

Probably no one. I'll look to see if there's an interesting local candidate (but not likely, given where I live).

Considering your support for Maduro, I didn't take you for someone big on democracy so I can't say I'm surprised.

I wouldn't mind addressing that slur, however.

In my view, only an idiot (perhaps well meaning) would vote for something that either doesn't represent them or is hostile to their own interests. It's called "representative" democracy for a reason. The system is gamed to ensure a very narrow spectrum of representation. Until that changes, a lot of people, myself included, will sit out.

When I was younger, I was cajoled to vote Liberal to get rid of the Tories (1993). I didn't mind the original Trudeau-ites (my family were huge supporters and I even met PET as a youngster) and so cast my vote for them.

That vote helped to usher in the dismantling of Canada's welfare state and a massive reversal in progressive taxation, among many other things that have caused mountains of damage. Never again.

So what country isn't gamed in your opinion?

So just for us expats...

Trudeau in blackface is ok? Seems people are quite forgiving. Also seems hypocritical.
