New Canadian Politics Thread

The best thing that could happen is the conservative party splitting. Let pp take his Trump nutters to the ppc. Then you hope you get a normal, reasonable conservative party again. Also a fair playing field with both sides splitting the vote
Splitting the left into 4 parties hasn’t helped the left much.

Yeah, 2 months ago it was a question whether the CPC would get 220 or 240 seats. Even if all this just leads to a minority for them, that's huge.

Yep. This has always been the name of the game for me. Of course ideally, I’d like PP’s CPC to get wiped out at the polls as thoroughly as possible. But the real important thing is to keep him to a minority.

Either they won’t be able to form a government at all at that point, or at the very least they’ll be severely restrained.

Frankly, it’s scary the amount of irrevocable damage that could be done to Canadian sovereignty over the next 4-5 years with an expansionist, dictatorial Trump ruling the States and Poilievre having the power of a majority here in Canada.

It’d be great to see the CPC split. But “normal, reasonable conservatives” are such a rare, endangered species these days that I can’t imagine them having the critical mass to either take back the CPC or form a viable break-away party.

At least, not in the current “first-past-the-post” system.

I have no appetite to count my Bouzy's before they hatch. Still think the most likely scenario is a PP win but I'm comforted that it may at least be a minority.

I agree, and it’s more likely that they’d do exactly what US conservatives have done: sell their souls for power.

Conservatives simply can't be trusted with power. For all their propaganda about the left being "commies" and "Marxists", or, as Trump says "radical leftists", when the left is in power they tend to govern just ever so slightly left of center when they lean left at all. You can be to the left of fascists and still not be truly leftist.

But conservatives get a taste of power and they inevitably start sliding toward authoritarianism. Fascism is just in their DNA now. People who are conservative are more easily radicalized by social media than any other group because they're so fucking stupid and gullible.

I am thinking "Kim Campbell" numbers

A Nanos poll out today has the CPC down to 36.9%, Liberals up to 33.3

Borrowed from a reddit poster, tracking all Nanos polls since January

When Carney is made official, there will be a Carney bump. When the hypothetical has been asked in other polls, he seems to generate a 4-7 point lift.

One of the positives looking at this is how Liberal support appears to be coming almost entirely from the CPC. NDP and BQ have stayed stable. GRN and PPC lost 1-1.5 points each that one way or another have found their way to the Liberal counts as well.

With CPC voting efficiency being traditionally shit and looking like it's actually getting worse, I could see the Liberals winning a minority if these numbers held up.
