No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

that meme really pierced your soul eh.

for good reason of course.
Omg don’t tell me now you think you came up with the inception schtick. I definitely didn’t put that into your head.

Not liking this run of independent thinking on your part in recent days.

Life is lovely when one of the best RW'ers in the league drags you around at 5v5, sure.

But if Minten doesn't pan out, we've got a gaping hole at 3C and a deep enough forward group to run 3 scoring lines. It would be nuts to not try Willy at C for an extended stretch and see if he takes to it. He was an elite natural centre at every level until Saskatchewan Science decided that he wasn't. If it's at least tried between now and the deadline, we know what we need to focus on adding, and honestly, at 5v5, Tavares is just an okay 2C at this point, but would be a fantastic 3C.

It was always a bit of a pipe dream, honestly. I cheer for the kid because we drafted him, but for a prospect of Minten's level, expecting him to play 3C on a contender is a tall, tall ask. and that is no insult to him.

As for Nylander, there is a good reason he isn't being used at C even though the lineup probably makes sense for him to go there. The reason is that he is not a capable enough defensive player to handle the position. That's it.

like seriously if Willy was playing on BUF or OTT he could be a 90pt C with no D and nobody would pay attention to his defensive weaknesses.

you're just completely wrong.

and the proof is that, however much it makes sense on paper, the Leafs don't play Nylander at centre because he doesn't do a good job of it. It has been tried before multiple times and every time he goes back to wing. And nowadays, this is in spite of it actually making a lot of sense to use him at C and JT at wing. Willy remains at wing, though. Why is that? why was he put back this latest time?

as for Willy playing C on a shit team, I do not see how that is in any way relevant. sure he could get away with no defence like Stutzle does, but that is a non playoff team. The Leafs are supposed to be a contender. They will be playing other contenders in the playoffs. William Nylander is not good enough at centre, in the judgement of multiple coaches and GMs, to be considered a serious long term option there.

He’s also a monster on the wing. Move him to C and the wing suddenly gets weak. Unless Domi is going supernova any time soon.

well i don't think he's a better choice than Tavares there, really. but we're pretty spoiled center wise. heck having all of willy, jarnkrok, domi, holmberg havig played plenty of C is a better situation than most teams have for C depth. and the fact that Willy was given the role ahead of those guys that have played plenty of C in this league, and for good teams, says something too.

yeah we have higher standards than most teams, but still, Willy could be a star C in the same way many others in the league are considered one.

as for our situation here, Minten flat out earned the spot in camp i think. I don't think that's an insult to any of the other C options. He may or may not stick but he definitely deserved the shot. And he had a really good game last night against a solid team in his 2nd career game.

Maybe my memory is just for shit, but I can't remember Nylander-at-center being tried "multiple times" before, or for any extended period of time since his first initial call-up from the AHL back in the final season of the pre-Matthews era.

okay but he wasn't given the role though. that's the point. what's his longest stint at centre? I actually don't know but I have no memory of him ever playing there for long. The latest example being last month. They kinda made a big deal out of it, I think he played 1 game(?) and once again that was the end of it.

I would disagree a bit on the spoiled part primarily because the signing of Tavares did not give us the dominance over other teams it was supposed to. Domi is a weak centre and you're not going to see him much there either this year, I'd wager. Maybe if there's an injury. Holmberg isn't an NHL player that I've seen. the only offensive dud we allow to play C is Kampf but he provides a lot defensively and that becomes more important now that we've sacrificed some D to get more offence. Jarnkrok can at least legitimately play the position, but they don't use him there.

okay sure. but I never denied that. he's not a good C for this particular team, which is the one that counts. if he were a viable option, I really really think they would do it the last 2 years of JT's contract here. It actually makes sense to try now.

yeah of course he earned it. but staying past the 9 was always going to be tough. he's big and plays smart but a lot is being asked of him.
