The little secret that Dumba isn't sharing there is that he was asking for 5+ million initially. Leafs likely offered the Klingberg deal and couldn't go to 5. He scared off a bunch of teams and had to settle for much less money in the end because they all chose different options.

No one wants to admit that they likely missed out on a multi-year deal at 4m+ because they were greedy and was forced to sign with a bottom feeder for less money when they realized no one would pay up. In his mind it's less embarrassing to say that he chose Arizona willingly because of an investment property. I think I agree with him. I'd probably say that too to save my pride. "Yeah I love Arizona, I have property here. I totally chose them over Toronto on purpose."
