No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

But why would we want that when Kadri has proven since he left that when given the opportunity as a top 6 centre that he's JT's equal?

Why not take the much cheaper guy who is as good as the more expensive guy and then make the rest of the roster better rather than nerfing Kadri's career for no real reason.

Matthews-Kadri-Danault would have cost us less than Matthews-Tavares-Kampf ended up costing, and yes the reason we forced Kampf into that role was in the hopes of having a defensive matchup centre at a discount.
You make it sound like you can just wave a wand and acquire whoever you want. But in waving the wand, you often end up with Marleau, Bertuzzi, Klingberg, and others you wish you didn't sign. Who says you're going to come close to duplicating Tavares production with these other nickel and dime acquisitions?

You keep acting like having Tavares is a bad thing. It's a great thing. And if they were smart enough to retain Hyman and audacious enough to keep Kadri around, we'd probably be talking about a multiple cup winning team rather than your crazy obsession over Tavares being paid more than market rate, despite having taken a lesser offer than was on the table for him.

Or we could have not signed Tavares and run Matthews-Kadri-went and got an elite checking centre like J Staal, and still had money for the blueline.

I'm not saying other mistakes weren't made. But JT's mistake was the first dominoe in the mistakes of this era. A lot of the other mistakes were made in response to the cap crunch largely caused by JT's contract.

Can I have neither?
Was the Kadri exit really influenced by JT? Do you think he wouldn't have been forced out after those suspensions?

Heavily influenced. Just think it through man. If you're GM and Auston-Kadri is your 1-2, do you really trade him in any move that is a downgrade at the position?

it was dumb shit all around by dubes.

once they decided to trade him they needed to maximize the return. We wouldn’t be complaining if they got long term pieces that helped the team.

Instead they traded him for a 3rd line winger and one season of a guy who was one oft the worst dmen in the league in his own zone.

Then let him leave a year later?

He got paid and they have stars to pay. They've shuffled through a bag of 2C's since and have clearly missed him but Mack, Rantanen, Makar, Toews had to get paid.

If Kadri would have signed for the 5.75 Mittelstadt did, they would have kept him.

I liked Kadri, sorry. They either should've kept him or made damn sure they were getting equal value back.

They got negative value back. Two guys we let walk for nothing.

Probably not likely, but the fact is that he’s pretty fucking great to be doing this 7 years in, even if it doesn’t last.

Maybe where we differ is that I'm not good with the high point of his season being a hatty against Winnipeg in October.

to be honest Tavares could well be due some oish% bounceback luck after an low % year last year.

might have been an age decline, but maybe not.

He had that crazy 10 game slump with zero points despite high shots and good play. A fluke awful spell that has no precedent in his career.

His salary was a top 5 salary in the league most of the contract. of course it affected the team.

And the team failed miserably. If we could go back in time of course you choose to do something different. Its not even a question at this point.
Problem was that signing forced the team to go all in before the rebuild was over , poker chips were pushed all in

There was no chance the team was getting discount deals on 16 and 34

Team was never ready to win the cup with or without JT

D was never good enough but that contract forced many future moves to win now

Who knows what keeping Kadri and using the cap savings would of yielded but clearly getting 91 wasn’t the answer

I am not blaming JT coming home simply the fit and cap gymnastics moving forward .
