I think he’ll stay. But it’s not going to be cheap. Either a Matthews 3-4 year deal for $13 ish, or long term over $14.

I also wouldn’t be in a rush to sign him because he is playing great.

But if he does leave after refusing to move that’s real bad.

I was quite surprised to hear they asked Marner to move. Interesting.

At this point though, letting him walk for nothing is on its own merits a fireable offence. It would constitute a gross mishandling of an elite asset. And we are marching inexorably towards that happening.

Shanahan must be held accountable (finally) if that happens. Absolutely a fireable offence, on top of the playoff non-results.
 
Unless he wins a cup here this is his legacy. I'm a believer players should get as much as they can,. But the way this has been handled (Both times) is idiotic by his people.

I think $13-14M is what he would’ve been looking for on a long-term deal last summer.

Now that the league’s announced the cap ceiling will be going up by $7.5M next year & $25.5M over the next three seasons, mark my words—he won’t re-sign with the Leafs for an AAV any lower than $16M.
 
Hey, I’m calm. And this isn’t some big change of opinion for me. I’ve been arguing for years that Marner’s “ask” of the Leafs on his next deal would be an unprecedented amount with no basis in fairness or reality and with no comparables to back it up—even moreso than his last deal, which was also totally bonkers.

And I don’t see how that “ask” isn’t going to keep going up in direct proportion with a dramatically rising salary cap.

I’m also not really bothered by this either, as someone who’s preference is for Mitch to walk out the door for nothing, rather than re-sign him to a gargantuan overpayment for a second straight long-term contract.
 
It was a pretty dang significant piece of news that came out of this deadline quite frankly. Agree about staying calm, but it's no longer conjecture. Leafs were ready to move on. Clearly they don't love how the negotiations are going because like for like, I'm not sure they wouldn't take Marner over Rants all day.

If, at this point, they have no idea where his head is at and whether he wants to sign in Toronto, then yeah I'd say that's newsworthy. But maybe that's just me.
