Sure, he just wants to rake us over the fucking coals again on money.
If he flops in the playoffs again though....how do you sign him to a 100+ million dollar deal?

Plenty of reasons to do that aside from a legitimate desire to re-sign here.

Some possibilities, off the top of my head:
Carolina isn’t a destination he’s interested in signing with and he didn’t want to be a rental.
He doesn’t want to suddenly uproot his heavily pregnant wife for a mid-season trade he has the power to stop.
He wants to take one last crack at winning here with this group before walking out the door and/or he thinks this year’s Leafs have a better chance to win than this year’s ‘Canes.
Spite - he feels wronged by the organization and/or the fans. Whether it’s for slights real & imagined, or the Leafs not immediately being willing to pay him whatever he wants. So he’d rather they get nothing for him than facilitate a trade for a guy who could end up being an upgrade.
The Friedman quote is the source and that one seems to say that they told Mitch their preference is to sign him
So leafs players are the only ones that can't stand the idea of moving.
And then, weirdly, as soon as the contract ends they're ready to move away pronto.
as expected patches goes to ltir, leafs go down to a 22 man roster, patches/hak can't play any more in the regular season.

our dcorps seems locked in for a few years.
offseason will be all about forwards.
I wouldn’t get too excited about Mitch turning down that deal. Plenty of reasons to do that aside from a legitimate desire to re-sign here.
Honestly, I’m just shocked Treliving had the balls to ask. Just too bad he didn’t find the stones to do it before Mitch’s NMC kicked in.
Also pretty funny to see it play out like this, when I was assured for years that I was wrong to firmly believe that Mitch or Tavares would refuse to waive in exactly this kind of scenario.
It’s not looking good for mo. It’s totally possible he bounces back but I don’t want the leafs to take that chance.I think 85 percent chance of a new GM (and president) leaving anything is on the table next summer.
I would hope they try everything possible to get rid of MR this summer. That contract is going to age horribly. Not sure who is available to target instead, but want the guy off the team asap before the league realizes his contract sucks too
Dubas was the GM when the NMC kicked in
Nope. His NMC kicked in on July 1st, 2023.
Dubas was fired on May 19, 2023, Treliving was officially hired on May 31st.
So you can argue it would have been a bold move trading Mitch essentially right after being hired. But the fact remains he did still have an entire month where he had the opportunity.
