One or two excuses & probably quite limited! The "ah fuck, here we go again" playoff thread

willy's 100% gonna push robby out unfortunately.

though I gotta say I don't know if i'd break up that 4th line either.

the more interesting call will be when McMann is ready to go.
I don't think Willy bumps Robby. I think Dewar or Reaves get bumped and Jarn drops down.

It was a guarantee and I didn't need to know that this happened to know it was a guarantee, but it's no coincidence that Willy was taking shifts in Robertson's slot in yesterday's practice. If he was ready to go, Robertson was out.

Dewar for Gregor might be the biggest upgrade this roster has seen this year. And it's probably more because Gregor is horrendous than because Dewar is great but I have to say I haven't hated Dewwy. He's an NHLer for sure I think. This is the first time their fourth line has been an asset in the playoffs in a few years now. Tree built a better fourth line than Dubas ever did I think.

Then fuck that.

Like I said before, if we win something here, it's going to be because Matty and the stars dragged fat boy kicking and screaming to a cup.

I didn't realize Dewar wasn't on either of the top 2 PK units. I'm a bit surprised. But if he's not there than his spot in the lineup might be more vulnerable than i thought.

I’m still not convinced that Dewar is anything more than a run of the mill replacement-level player.

But apparently that’s enough to be a massive fucking upgrade on Noah Gregor.

so if you watch the replay of that set-play Pastrnak go-ahead goal last night, the reason the two dmen were up so high is because each was sticking to boston's wingers and best players - Pastrnak and Marchand.

It's just that Pastrnak made a really nice play to go all the way up to the blueline while dropping the puck to mcavoy to use Knies to pick Benoit (and vice versa) and give him a clear run down the middle. And marchand's pass was legit fantastic.

I don't know that the leafs did anything wrong there tbh. I guess the question is if Benoit should have been smart enough to stop shadowing pastrnak all the way up to the blueline and cut underneath the pick to protect the slot. Would have been a heady play.

Bertuzzi - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Domi - Nylander
Knies - Tavares - McMann
Holmberg/Dewar - Kampf - Jarnkrok/Reaves

Zacha's pass.

Marner got lost on it though, and there's still no excuse for zero dmen near the goalie.

marner wasn't lost, he was covering his man on the point. everyone was on their guy. Benoit just lost Pastrnak on the pick.

Breaking up the Bert -🌵- Domi line would be a big mistake. Don’t mess with that chemistry for Mitch’s sake.

It’s on him to show he has the will and ability to be an impact player and drive a line without having to ride shotgun for the greatest goal-scorer of all time & best two-way center in the game.

And if he fails utterly at doing that, well, that’d be a good thing to know before contract negotiations start up this summer.

I'm mixed on Mitch but yeah another bitch playoff and first round exit and I'm not sure it's a particularly difficult decision for me.

He was absolutely terrific in games 1-4ish last year vs Tampa. Completely useless since then. He tends to fade when they make things a bit uncomfortable on him which is never a good sign. But he's been very good in the playoffs at times in the past so maybe he will be again!

He's a remarkable talent and I'd love to keep him tbh. But another first round exit with Mitch being a bitch and maybe it's time to let go. You can't pay him like a franchise player when you can't even rely on him to drive a line getting secondary matchups against elite teams. But it has just been two games, so much can and will change. Fun to speculate though!

And my expectations have increased on Willy too moving forward because of his new salary! His dreamy eyes and gorgeous hair won't be enough to woo me any more.

I keep feeling like, once we get somewhere, we might see magic mitch come alive when things get exciting in the third round or finals.

They really gotta just get over the hump.
