One or two excuses & probably quite limited! The "ah fuck, here we go again" playoff thread

Been thinking about this quite a bit. These guys got spooked by a young team coming up short. They decided they had to surround their ultra talented guys with a lineup that was the complete opposite. Despite the teams that have had huge success playing run and gun in recent years (COL, PIT). Basically decided the media was right, which is terrifying.

We dumped all our speed and skill for slow, low event pluggers. I'm not saying Mikky, Kapanen, Hyman (who I was big wrong on), Giraffe, etc. were the perfect mix, but atleast they could burn. Any "toughness" you add better be able to skate like the wind. A team with Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Rielly should be built for run and gun - double down on your strengths. This team sucks AND they're boring.
Meh I think this years team with Bert, domi, Robertson, knies and Mcmann is more talented than that other leafs team.

They still can’t score in the playoffs though.

This is a coaching / style thing.

This is the best group of support skill in the forward group, 100%

It's the worst collection of skill on the backend I've ever seen in my Leaf fandom life though. Can't score if the puck can't move north efficiently.
100pct. Wish we had klingberg

It was honestly a thing of beauty watching LA last night transition from D to O in an instant with just easy, easy passes. Edmonton was doing similar, but rushing the puck a bit more, with a good degree of success.

Watching our shitty guys skate in mud and then sending the puck to the other team or icing it is painful.

And knowing Lilly, who is the only guy other than Rielly who can do anything, is sitting for the likes of Baboob, Ed, and busted Brodie, just adds to it.

I'm going to try and put together what the current leafs would look like if they had never made any trades or free agent signings since drafting Matthews. Just let some vets leave as UFA. Correct me if i'm wrong anywhere here:

Hyman --- Matthews --- Marner
Moore --- Kadri --- Nylander
McMann --- Engvall --- Marchment
Knies --- Holmberg --- Robertson
(Joshua --- Carrick --- Grundstrom)

Rielly --- Durzi
Sandin --- Liljegren
Dermott --- Holl
(Rosen --- Zaitsev)

Woll
Reimer
(Hildeby)

yes this team fits under the cap.
and that doesn't even included the picks we traded away over that time.

we would have missed out on guys like Muzzin and Andersen over the middle years tho.

most hedge funds underperform the market

hand sitting is underrated

I've been yelling about trusting the pipeline for a bunch of years now. The answers to less important questions are almost always available inside.

Whenever you're thinking about signing a depth forward to a long term contract, you need to stop and ask yourself if you don't have in house options. We never needed Jarnkrok, Bobby McMann was ready in 2022. We didn't need to sign Kampf to that ridiculous contract, Holmberg was ready to be a 4C at minimum 1-2 yrs ago. Remember that time we signed shitty Zaitsev to a stupid contract after his 2017-18 season? We had a 25 yr old #1 defender on the Marlies at the time named Justin Holl.

you also get stuff (picks, prospects, expiring contracts)from the underperformers like Kap, Johnson, etc

I think it's different when you're targeting those roster slots that are team/franchise changers though. Starter/1A goalie, legit top 3 defender, legiit top 6 forward.

It's when you start doing dumb shit with cap and assets to fill the rest is where you get in trouble. Or obviously, overpaying massively for someone who just isn't worth it.

It's gonna be so funny when they beat the bruins 3 straight and go on a #titlerun

I'm entirely fine with admitting that this team violates me emotionally and puts me on tilt sometimes in a way nothing else really does.

A deep playoff run from here wouldn't change how I felt about the organization though. But hockey is weird, and weird shit sometimes happens.

You know, I've been conditioned to buy the Leafs dip, but even moreso inclined now because this dip is actually a crash. I can't find any optimism anywhere here! Just uber bears like WeHave counting their chickens. And level headed dudes already pressing print on their post mortems

I'm still short but the discussion here today probably makes it likely that they're gonna win the cup and Tavares is getting the Conn Smythe.

ME better enjoy his victory lap today because he's about to look real dumb.
