OT: American Politics

I meant that that the alarming part is the pain that he'll inflict upon poor human beings.

The podcast title made it sound like that the fact that he may do this is the alarming part not the actual action. ( Listening to the actual pod now)

To me from that perspective this is not a surprise. Trump said he'll inflict pain, he'll throw illegal and legal immigrants out, he'll prosecute those not loyal to him etc

He said it over and over again. He clearly has the mandate.
okay understood. I agree he has the mandate.

I was just concerned that you were brushing off the harm and suffering that is to come, because he has that mandate.

to me they are separate issues - yah, he said we was gonna deport people during the campaign, and he won. but I still think it's wrong and inhumane and am going to continue to oppose it.

I don’t know. But mass deportations have been happening for a long time.

I am not sure they will be worse.
the only way I see them not getting worse is through sheer incompetence, not for lack of effort. this is a main plank in trump's platform. and they've been screaming about it all campaign. I really don't think they're going to continue business as usual.

they've openly talked about deporting legal migrants along with their families! and citizens too

Today, the US is 48th in the world for life expectancy, and 57th in infant mortality.

I suspect that this will change, and not for the better, in 2025.

On the plus side, if you're really rich today, you will be really really richer tomorrow.
I am trying to accept that the relative freedom and ease with which I have enjoyed the first half of my life is going to disappear for my remaining years. sucks that it's going that way, but I doubt we ever see a more successful, healthy, thriving America than the current version. it will take decades to recover from the devastation to come, if there is ever a full recovery.

more likely this is the beginning of the end of the era where America is the world superpower.

I took it more as "you are gonna get what you asked for"

which is a reasonable point to make, but distinct in my mind from whether that means we should try and prevent the whole mass deportation thing
One of the first executive orders will be to keep transgenders out of women's sports, because it is so ramped and important.

Zeihan argues that this came with the ending of the Cold War. Essentially countries received American security, assurances and pretty much unfettered access to the American marketplace. This was a deal that provided Americans with security at the expense of their working class.

America could still be a global superpower if it wanted to. It doesn’t want to. The American people are more concerned with their own economic well-being, then providing security, assurances globally.

This was happening, whether it was Trump or not.

If you read the End of the World is just the beginning you can see that this was done under Biden under Trump and Obama.

It is a trend that’s been happening over the last 20 years. This is just going to accelerate the process.

I think America is split nearly 50-50 on this issue. but the side who doesn't want to just swept the elections, and to the victor goes the spoils
