OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

welp, I am home sick from work today.

bizarre steady lower back pain (which google helpfully tells me is a comicron symptom).
ongoing GI issues
bit of a runny nose but that started last week and I attributed it to winter
no sore throat, but it was scratchy last week

rapid test this morning says negative but likely going to need to go for a PCR. illness (allegedly non-covid) circulating in office last week.

Ms. Wayward was fine yesterday but starting to get some brain fog this morn...
RIP (Seriously I hope you feel better soon)

That sucks. Feel better.
thanks. truthfully I could have forced myself to go into the office but seems unwise and unnecessary given what we know.

will see how much of the workday I can make it through. fortunately nothing debilitating *for now*, just fucking annoying and the unknown is a little unpleasant. soonest we can get PCR tests is Thursday.

If you have enough rapid tests keep doin them. One tonight, one tomorrow, one Thursday, etc. You're bound to get a positive within the next 24-48 hours if you are indeed omicrowned.

Probably best to try for for pcr. I've had a cough for a bit, nothing else really of the general symptoms. Have taken multiple rapid tests, all negative. Went in for pcr yesterday, and got the results back positive apparently.

At least if I do have Omicron, it seems I've caught the fauxmicron variant. Still gonna suck through the holidays.

this morning's was our last one. leftover from last time we went through an airport. new ones in the mail...

Cousin and her husband have been victimized by Omicron.

Both have 2 doses of the Derns. Cousin on day 4 and still battling. Husband started feeling it yesterday.

Symptoms for cousin: described as a very severe flu (still can't shake fever without tylenol, extreme fatigue, sore throat, night sweats, super congested)
Symptoms for husband: described as a typical flu (don't know deets on his symptoms)

Neither are even close to being hospitalized or anything tho. Just a shitty sickness is all. Hopefully they have full recoveries. Crazy how much symptoms can vary from person to person.

Think that's first omicron person I've heard describe something closer to mine so I guess the vaccines are mostly doing their job.

do you know what their reaction to the vaccines was?

I wouldn't describe that as a severe flu. Just flu.

Haven't really heard much of the weird symptoms yet that were associated with the other variants like complete loss of smell/taste, tingling arms and hands, etc and it doesn't seem like it's affecting the lungs as much. But that's just anecdotal and I dunno what experience an unvaxxed person would have.

Most reports are that symptoms are (commonly) more in-line with a typical cold, which probably leads to a significant underreporting of cases.

Think it's the same with unvaxxed. Loss of smell/taste is less common and there's some data behind it based on a UK symptom self-reporting service.

Some speculation that it's also partially why the rapid tests when done intranasally are less sensitive than with prior variants. It attacks different parts (i.e. upper airway) more efficiently than prior variants.

Now, Sato and Gupta both have data suggesting syncytia may be rarer with Omicron. Taking all of the data together, Gupta says, “I think the evidence is mounting … that the virus potentially causes less progression to severe disease.”
Gupta is a no nonsense, no "hopium" scientist who tells it like it is. He alerted the world to Delta and was one of the first to discover its increase virulence. He was despised for his honesty on Delta by the "everything is actually ok" minimizers. For him to say this... It gives me hopium.
